Console autoupdate = amen for that
 PC autoupdating = screw MS

Consoles exist to be a consistent and standardised system so that developers can be confident about what system they're making the product for. Updates are generally required to play certain software, and generally seek to increase functionality. And console autoupdating can always be disabled (unless MS have done something with the One that I'm not aware of) if the user doesn't want it to happen.

PCs (not counting Mac, where standardisation is expected) exist to provide users with choice, with certain standard libraries used to ensure compatibility for most products. Users want their systems to be highly configurable. Having the option to have automatic updates is good... but it should be an option.

Especially since updates can get quite large, and many people have quite limited internet quotas (I don't know if that's common in America, but in Australia, quotas are common and can be quite restrictive for some). Being unable to use your internet on your PC because, if you connect, Windows will download large updates without your permission, immediately eating up your quota that you had hoped to use, could be a huge problem.

Personally, I dual boot Windows and Xubuntu... and only rarely use Windows, where necessary. If I have to go through a huge download of updates every time I boot up Windows, I'm just not going to use Windows at all (I'll put up with not having access to certain programs/games).

And by the way, what did you think the big uproar pre-release regarding the Xbox One was? People like the idea of having the choice for streamlining. They severely dislike having any alternative option taken away, especially when it causes problems for them. Whether it's requiring online even for offline functionality, or forcing updates when connecting online, it's wrong.

But thats the thing. What annoys me about those moaning is that they arent even aware they wont notice the update since it does the proccess during restars and not the other way around. While when I play online specially a round of CoD or Halo or whatever thata matters the most not to interupt and yet my xbox tells me its time to update is the real issue.

Correct me if i am wrong but its like trying to explain a child why you eat after you swimm and not the other way around whenever I see arguements like those. I am a power user and even I am will be having the pro version on most my machines, I know I wouldnt mind the autoupdating ( as long as i can check the history log whenever I feel like it ) cause in order for MS making it automatic both for home or even enterprise users means that the proccess should make no interuption to the workflow or risk being corrupt etc. Doesnt that seem sensible to you?

That's a myth that it causes you to die btw, if anything exercise after food isn't a bad idea in the slightest.

I don't see why that's an issue if you have a legit copy.
I have never had an update that destroyed my computer. Generally that only happens if there is something nefarious on your computer.

Gotta figure out how to set these up lol.

Auto updates in win 7 can be scheduled for whatever time you like, it doesn't have to happen while you are working. Win7 also only updates once a month not 3 or 4 times a week. (patch tuesday), only time you get extra is ciritical out of band patches which happen once every few months.

Part of my job is around security and patch management for large organisations. I am in a constant battle with people that have the same dated view on patching.  I usually have to dig through their outages reports over the last few years to demonstrate how wrong their views on patching is. It constantly amazes me the amount of IT people that are out of touch with modern practises. Litterally yesterday I had to drag out the outage reports for an issue that has plagued a company for 5 years, affecting thousands of people and all because there IT people advised them it is safer not to update even though their was a known patch for their issue costing hours of downtime for thousands of people every month.

Another large research place I was at last week was in an absolute mess, they could not actually apply the latest security fixes as their systems were so out of date that it wasn't possible to apply it without applying 100's of patches first. It cost them hugely in overtime and downtime. Another one 2 weeks ago with an organisation that hadn't been updating their SAN firmware or switch firmware and we found the cause of their outages for the last 12 months was a bug that was fixed 3 years ago.

Nearly all of the biggest worms and viri on the internet have relied on peole not patching as they exploit old vulnerabilities.

I don't doubt your horror stories and for companies it makes perfect sense to auto update at night.

Yet consider my user experience. I don't leave my desktop on, so scheduling auto updates is of no use. When I start my desktop after a week or 2 to do something, a pack of hungry wolves immediately attack my internet connection, Windows updates, adobe reader, adobe flash, iTunes, Firefox, Java, Virus scanner, etc. Trying to open a folder through all that assault on my hdd is nearly impossible. So screw auto updates.
Again a simple reminder at shut down, a simple would you like to update now, would be perfect. And then it needs to do it all the way, not the next time I start it up to begin with finishing installing updates.

I guess I'll restart now, windows update is threatening me again "Restart your PC, your PC will automatically restart in 1 day if you don't restart now" (That's on my always on laptop where I expect everything that's open to stay open over night) I finished my heavy burgers and am going to jump in the pool now ;) It's still 31c out, pool is 29c, I love summer.

Off topic, but I think this is probably my favorite post of the day.  Someone who believes old wives tales and types "ahaha" after "lmao" challenges the age of someone else.  You can't make up stuff like that.

On topic, this better be something you can schedule in terms of when the updates download.  If not, I'm fine with Windows 7.
