Forums - Microsoft Discussion - This is not the first time microsoft has published third party similar to Sony's games

Well, they have plenty own IPs but all that cash lying around needs to be spend somewhere.

I agree that they own many ips, but new generations are shaped by new ips. This is their achillies heel and it will catch up with them just like it did last gen my friend. After five years they will feel the burn of throwing money at third party and they will admit it's an expensive endeavor just like last gen when the drought started. For companies like Sony and microsoft whose games primarily serve western audiences it's a big deal to have fresh new content. Hopefully third party comes through for microsoft, for it they don't it's going to spell issues down the road because microsoft lives and dies by sequels.

Was Forza started created by a developer they owned? Hopefully that's 1.

I never thought of that before, how MS doesn't have a killer app that was created by their own developers.

There's only 2 races: White and 'Political Agenda'
2 Genders: Male and 'Political Agenda'
2 Hairstyles for female characters: Long and 'Political Agenda'
2 Sexualities: Straight and 'Political Agenda'

MS see things with only a business point of view (even more than the other two), even if Phil Spencer "is a gamer".

Why would you risk money and investments when you can just buy something successful? Why would you develop your own studios with risky new IPs when you can turn Black Tusk Studio into a "Gears of War factory" (=easy money factory)? Why would you support something like The Last Guardian, Bayonetta or Dreams, which cost money and won't sell by millions easily?

MS doesn't take risks : Halo, Forza, Fable, Gears, a few big IPs moneyhats, and nice and innovative smaller and cheaper games. Nintendo (mostly) and Sony have a "gamers culture" more than MS IMO (for now), and will make more niche games, take more risks with new IPs, and trust their studios more (and invest more in their studios). MS still need to learn how to do that.

This! Microsoft really need their own ips.

So what is it that you have a problem with? Is it that MS buys timed exclusives (which Sony has done many times) or that they release a game to counter a successful franchise? (which Sony has done numerous times as well)

Name two games that were timed exclusive that Sony has published to keep away from sony. I can add mass effect to he ms list. That's three now.

The original tomb raider was kept away from the competition by a deal. Sony also made a deal to keep content within destiny locked out from people on Xbox, meaning we bought a game that were even couldn't use fully because a deal between Sony and Activision. The original killzone was made as a direct competitor to Halo. They all do it but I guess that doesn't fit your argument :).

While I have no issue in the slightest with what you say S.T.A.G.E. because I mean it's a true statement about those 2 games, I find it so strange that 50%+ of the topics on the front page are related to Tomb Raider, the last game had super new technology hair and people didn't really give that much of a rats ass about it.

The fact of the platform this is or isn't coming out on day 1 shouldn't cause so much attention for the title I think, good or bad, think there has been maybe 1 thread about the actual gameplay or graphics in the game lol.

It's because people are attracted  to controversy. Tomb raider by name is mostly associated with playstation. Phil Spencer knew what he was doing when the deal was made for Tomb Raider. Phil admitted his reasoning for funding tomb raider because as a fan of uncharted he had no answer for he game even though he was invested in projects like uncharted and they weren't on level. Hell even EA has ripped off sonys god of war. Can't blame people but microsoft is a console  manufacturer. In this day and age being able to pump out your own  games tells your consumers about your character .  So far third get in and they still have no identity outside of superior online.

When did that happen?

None of that fits in with what you said initially. As you said Tomb Raider wasn't a timed exclusive and neither was it an answer to another successful franchise. A DLC doesn't count as a full new game, and if you want to speak about Sony trying to make a direct competitor to Halo from their own first-party MS also did this with Forza Motorsport trying to be a  competitor to GT. Competition is in no way bad dude. However, that competition needs to be from your own developers. With this said I'm totally with anyone who doesn't like Sony's deal with the original TR.

On one side they have their own studio Rare making compilation of old games, on the other they spent 2 billion dollars on Minecraft.

Microsoft priorities are not what people may expect from the Xbox division.

How many studios they could have funded with that money? How many new IPs they could have made? They always choose the third party total/timed exclusive route. Its a shame really.

MS never publish NG2

People serious think Minecraft are mainly for Xbox games? even they didn't bought Minecraft, this money still never go to Xbox division.
