Forums - Microsoft Discussion - This is not the first time microsoft has published third party similar to Sony's games

This is all hilarious considering Sony built the PlayStation brand's success by wresting away existing 3rd party IP after 3rd party IP from the competition while simultaneously buying up or contracting exclusive publishing agreements with 3rd party studios to build up their own "1st party" library during the PS1 & 2 days.

Check out the lists of top selling PS1 and 2 games of all time here on VGChartz, and show me how many games near the top in each were original IPs developed from the ground up by Sony's own internal studios?

http://www.vgchartz.com/platform/5/playstation/

http://www.vgchartz.com/platform/4/playstation-2/

Besides the Gran Turismo series, there are zero original Sony-developed IPs in the top 20 for either console... all other titles were either from existing studios that Sony eventually bought such as Naughty Dog or had exclusive publishing rights to such as Insomniac, or were from 3rd party studios outright, several of which Sony published such as FFVII, the original Kingdom Hearts, and the Tekken franchise which was exclusive to Sony platforms until Tekken 6.

But how dare M$ try to secure exclusive rights to Sony "franchises" like Tomb Raider, right? But it was OK when 3rd party franchises that were former Nintendo exclusives like Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Mega Man, etc all made the jump to Sony.

This is what I wanted to say, but couldn't word it right. Thanks.

I don't know. Microsoft has Gears 4, Recore, ScaleBound, Quantum break, Sea of Theives, Crackdown 3, Forza Horizon 3 (more than likely), Killer Instinct Season 3 (more than likely) coming out next year.

At this point, it would be foolish not to expect another Forza game next year. Turn 10 and Playground managed to keep to 2 year turn around despite the console transition in between. It would take severe mismanagment to make it otherwise.

I'm not trying to start anything, but I think Horizon or the last guardian won't make it next year for PS4 given Sony's track record. I think next year it will be Uncharted, street fighter 5 and ratchet and clank remake will be Sony's lineup next year.

Personally I have faith in Geurilla to deliver on time, however I also said there's no way The Order 1886 would miss Holiday since they removed the multiplayer and that there's no way Sony would delay Uncharted 4 and Ratchet Redux with their otherwise anemic lineup being what it was...but we know what happened there.

Actually, MS top priority should just be to own the IP and ensure careful managment to cultivate the IP into a franchise rather than a 1 and done. Owning the studio only becomes an issue if said studio is on the verge of shutdown or takeover.

If Microsoft purchased Remedy, Platinum, Armature/Comcept and whoever is making Crackdown tomorrow, the lineup wouldn't change one iota. The biggest gain would be owning the Alan Wake IP.

Microsoft are better at managaing their important IPS than Sony. Halo and Forza move from strength to strength while Killzone and Motorstorms turgid corpses rot in the harsh desert sun of the of the never-weres.

As I said before, it made sense for Sony to buy out developers in the PS1 era because they pretty much didn't have any of their own. Less so in the PS2 days when Sony were still reliant on third parties, but by the PS3, Sony had allowed these purchased developers to fluorish.

MS have been in the console business for a long time now; plenty of time for them to have a diverse and large enough portfolio of first party games that these third party deals should not be that important. If we look at the studios they have built up at the start of the gen, their first party output should be massive.

Oh, but they are important, because despite Sony having a much stronger stable of 1st party studios and IPs over the past gen with the PS3 and now the PS4 (of which Sony fans are always quick to remind everyone, of course), the fact remains that generation after generation it's the 3rd party titles that are the driving force behind console sales for Sony, not their own IPS.  Here's the current top 10 best selling PS4 games... notice how many are developed or published by Sony or Sony's developers are present here:

Only one 1st party title is in the top 10... and it's a "remastered" version of a last gen game.  And all the rest of the top 10 games are multiplatform  / cross gen titles as well.  You have to go all the way down to #14 on the list to find the first 1st party title in the sales charts that's also exclusive to PS4.  3rd party titles and the perception that the PS4 is the lead platform for said games are the reason the PS4 is leading in sales... not because of the supposed strength of Sony's stable of 1st party exclusives.

It still cracks me up. People on this forum constantly bang on about the importance of exclusives and first party. Yet throughout gaming history, with the exception of a few notable titles and Nintendo, 3rd party always has and pretty much always will be the driving force of the industry.

Hell the lack of 3rd party for Nintendo right now is clearly very damaging.

Yes a game like The Last of Us is cool, but when most gamers are playing Call of Duty, FIFA and Grand Theft Auto. Surely it's more important that you offer those titles?

Exactly.  In fact, one could make the argument that M$'s stable of 1st party exclusive franchises are much more crucial to their success and have a much greater impact on console sales than Sony's do, because IPs like Halo and Gears do far more for the sales of Xbox consoles than many of Sony 1st party exclusives like Killzone, God Of War, InFamous, Little Big Planet etc have.  Only Gran Tourismo has been the consistent 1st party console mover for Sony for every PlayStation generation.  Beyond that only Naughty Dog's Crash Bandicoot (when it was Sony exclusive) and Uncharted IPs have really moved consoles on a similar level to M$'s heavy hitters.  Even Jak & Daxter is way down the list on the PS2 software chart despite being a fan favorite IP.

Did the title of this post get changed?  Didn't it used to say Microsoft lost third party games to Sony?

All those titles shipped day and date with the X1 versions, so where is the exclusive "deal"? Maybe you mean the DLC specific deals, but some of those titles have X1 specific DLC so obviously those deals are pointless considering the sales on PS4 are still so strong.

First party is supposed to be there to supplement the library with exclusive titles you can't get anywhere else. Franchises like Last of Us, Uncharted, Gran Turismo, God of War on Sony's side and Halo, Forza and Gears of War on Microsoft's help to push the consoles (look at the sales of those franchises on last gen hardware). The promise of exclusive content from established franchises in the future help to push consoles. The promise of new exclusive, exciting games help to push consoles. Having third party games is essential to a successful console (didn't really suggest otherwise), but you also need unique selling points which is what first party exclusives give.

Brilliant post. I have raised these points before and learned thay Sony basically has an exempt card. I mean, its bad for MS to spend money to make headway into the industry. But its fine for Sony to sell consoles cheap and lose a lot of money, offer cheap royalty fees to publishers, and snatch up a lot of exclusive deals every single gen. Thats just good business!

Youll also learn that when MS makes a deal with a 3rd party company its complete and utter desperation and a waste of money. When Sony does it, its essentially because theyre the market leader and 3rd party companies basically cant help themselves but to show up at Sonys doorstep and beg for deals. Oh and what great deals they are for gamers!

Of course the OP leaves out games Sony has contracted out/bought to compete with other franchises. CTR, Playstation Super Mega Royale, SFV immediately come to mind without giving it any thought. Im sure a deeper look would reveal more. Newsflash: Competitors copy stuff thats successful. See: the Big King.

Op has a selective memory, we discuss this matter all the time and he still thinks that Son¥ sh*ts rainbow.
