So what is it that you have a problem with? Is it that MS buys timed exclusives (which Sony has done many times) or that they release a game to counter a successful franchise? (which Sony has done numerous times as well)

Name two games that were timed exclusive that Sony has published to keep away from sony. I can add mass effect to he ms list. That's three now.

The original tomb raider was kept away from the competition by a deal. Sony also made a deal to keep content within destiny locked out from people on Xbox, meaning we bought a game that were even couldn't use fully because a deal between Sony and Activision. The original killzone was made as a direct competitor to Halo. They all do it but I guess that doesn't fit your argument :).

None of that fits in with what you said initially. As you said Tomb Raider wasn't a timed exclusive and neither was it an answer to another successful franchise.

Tomb Raider exclusivity was purchased from Eidos to stop Tomb Raider 64 happening. However the original Tomb Raider was multiplatform launching day and date on Saturn and PC too (N64 wasn't actually out). Sony's deal started after the first Tomb Raider.

Psygnosis is a perfect example of a 3rd party developer they bought to lock down franchises from. WipeOut anyone?

Sony's exclusivity deals were more easy to pull off though. The Saturn was already on it's way out. The N64 media was not suitable for a lot of the games.

Sony got the likes of Ridge Racer through offering unparamount distribution support that neither SEGA nor Nintendo had previously offered 3rd parties. That was why Namco were so successful on the PlayStation. Ridge Racer would have had to compete with SEGA's arcade IPs on Saturn. Tekken would have gone head to head against Virtua Fighter on Saturn etc. PlayStation offered them a landscape where they could shine as top dogs.

Sony also lured Square away from the Saturn for Final Fantasy through offering to publish and distribute their software in Europe. This is why Final Fantasy 7 was the first mainline release to get a European release. Originally Final Fantasy 7 was in development for the Sega Saturn (Again, Nintendos choice of medium meant the N64 wasn't suitable).

But yeah, the original PS1 was built on 3rd party titles and exclusivity deals.

That all makes sense because the PS1 was the first console that Sony released. Sony didn't really have any first party developers at that stage, and to be perfectly honest, I don't think their first party have really come into their own until the PS3 gen (with the exception of Gran Turismo on PS1, and God of War on PS2). Microsoft are now coming into their third generation so we really should be seeing their first party really take off.

Based on what they were working on at the start of the gen I really thought MS' first party studios were going to show off their creativity. They still might but I don't think we've seen it so far.

Its certainly more understandable when a manufacturer makes such deals to push their first console. However once Sony got SCE WWS going they nearly with these deals. MS with their third console and so many studios is still making these deals. Its not nearly the same situation. Besides offering a competition-free landscape has nothing to do with moneyhatting. It was Sega's and Nintendo's lack of will to take risks which is why PlayStation is such a strong brand in Europe and so many other countries. You can't blame them for missed oppurtunities by the others.

Exactly. Which explains why MS got ROTTR for the Xbox One. Have to start somewhere

Sony did this with Street Fighter 5, the new Final Fantasy Remake, No Man's Sky... Plus they buy timed exclusive content all the time (Batman, Destiny etc.).

This is all hilarious considering Sony built the PlayStation brand's success by wresting away existing 3rd party IP after 3rd party IP from the competition while simultaneously buying up or contracting exclusive publishing agreements with 3rd party studios to build up their own "1st party" library during the PS1 & 2 days.

Check out the lists of top selling PS1 and 2 games of all time here on VGChartz, and show me how many games near the top in each were original IPs developed from the ground up by Sony's own internal studios?

http://www.vgchartz.com/platform/5/playstation/

http://www.vgchartz.com/platform/4/playstation-2/

Besides the Gran Turismo series, there are zero original Sony-developed IPs in the top 20 for either console... all other titles were either from existing studios that Sony eventually bought such as Naughty Dog or had exclusive publishing rights to such as Insomniac, or were from 3rd party studios outright, several of which Sony published such as FFVII, the original Kingdom Hearts, and the Tekken franchise which was exclusive to Sony platforms until Tekken 6.

But how dare M$ try to secure exclusive rights to Sony "franchises" like Tomb Raider, right? But it was OK when 3rd party franchises that were former Nintendo exclusives like Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Mega Man, etc all made the jump to Sony.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.
