I am somebody who's been a console gamer for 30 years, I've never owned a gaming PC before. When I was young I owned all Sega, Sony and Nintendo consoles but since the N64 I've only been gaming on Nintendo. My 64, GC, Wii and Wii U collections are quite extensive but I missed a lot of games that never made it to Nintendo consoles.

This week, after getting VERY fed up of the lack of 3rd party support for Wii U I went and bought a high spec Alienware Gaming PC. This made more sense to me than buying a PS4 or XBone. Now I need some advice on what to get stuck into.

Can anyone recommend some titles and even franchises to get? For example, if I was to get The Witcher would it be worth starting at # 1 or just going straight to # 3? What are some of your favourite games? Friends of mine keep talking up Just Cause, Bioshock, Fallout, Far Cry to name a few. Anything from the last 20 years is on the menu, I'm not worried about top end graphics - just great games.

How about Civilization V & BE ?

RollerCoaster Tycoon (Any of them, you choose), Cities: Skylines, Grim Fandango, Portal 1&2 (Especially 2), To the Moon and The Stanley Parable (Better to pick those two on a sale, imo). Can't think of much else right now, sorry =P

Edit: Also, if you're into indie games, A Hat in Time and SuperHOT are two games I'm personally looking forward to playing, both are different styles too.

Minecraft - Find a solid teamspeak community, get some modpacks and launchers and have a blast.
CS:GO - If you want to try comeptitive FPS
Civilization V
Kentucky Route Zero
Starcraft 2
Pillars of Eternity
Portal 1 and 2
Divinity: Original Sin
Dota 2 (takes a long time to get good but amazing)
League of Legends (if Dota2 is too hard and you have friends that play it)
Heroes of The Storm (If you just want to have fun in a MOBA)
Skyrim (Depending on the mods and PC specs, you could play a game that looks 50x better than any console game ever released)
Witcher is skippable, Witcher 2 is fun if you never played, but I prefer Witcher 3 and its great on PC
Just Cause is beautiful on PC
Torchlight 2 is also cool.

Cities: Skyline is also a really cool game.

A teamspeak community is essential if you want people to play new games with. Or Steam friends.
If you want the TS I use, they play all kinds of different games, PM and I will give you the server info.
Right now they are hooked on Trove and have been playing WoW a tad.

While I fucking love the Witcher franchise, I do understand that the first game can feel a bit primitive gameplay-wise, but the story is still top notch, and helps you to better enjoy the other two games and feel more close to the characters.

I also game on Nintendo and have every system up from N64 and handheld.  My only other console is PC.

I game on these systems like you to get the best of both worlds. My recommendations and favorite PC games that I would immediately recommend you play are:

I would either start with the Witcher 2. The Witcher 3 is the best but the Witcher 2 is a great game that still has great graphics and a strong story.

BioShock Infinite: The game's story anod ending will melt your face. Skip 1-2 (although good games) don't hold a candle to 3.

Civilization V: if you like Strategy games or Europa Universalis IV if you REALLY like strategy games.

Starcraft 2

Counter Strike Global Offensive: If you enjoy polished competitive gaming (it has a learning curve).

Metro 2033 and Last Light: Awesome atmospheric games that look great on your new rig.

Pillars of Eternity: If you like deep RPG's (the game I'm currently playing).

A couple cheaper Indies you can pick up that are amazing are Limbo, The Wolf Among us, To The moon.

In addition, I'd recommend Borderlands. The games are a lot of fun with a unique art-style and sense of humor. It's also a ton of fun collecting weapons. Start with Borderlands (1).

Dragon Age: Origins is an excellent game if you like RPGs with strategic combat. The first game is a bit buggy but it's extremely well made otherwise.

Far Cry 3 and Far Cry 4 are a lot of fun and it doesn't matter which one you start with. Different protagonists, different story-lines.

If you want some crazy, nonsensical fun that is definitely not kid-friendly, Saint's Row 3 is a blast. It does not take itself seriously whatsoever, which is what makes it fun.

I would recommend looking into the Total War series, but not all of them. Personally, I recommend getting Medieval 2 Total War and Shogun 2 Total War with all DLC. You can do that for not too much on Steam. The original Rome is a good game too but has some archaic design choices.

I am also an avid mod user so I will say there are some exceptional mods too. For Medieval 2, I highly recommend Third Age: Total War if you like Lord of the Rings. TA:TW is frankly the best Lord of the Rings game ever mode probably, definitely the best strategy one. Then I would recommend looking into Skyrim because there are also some great mods there. Nexus Mods is an amazing site for Skyrim mods and you can find some really outstanding stuff. Not to mention Enderal: Shards of Order is nearing release, a total conversion by SureAI who have mode some excellent total conversions for previous games Oblivion and Morrowind.

I was going to say Total War Shogun 2 because I've heard good things about it, but never played it.
