Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Microsoft lost more money this quarter than Sony

Its because of a $7.6 billion dollar writedown in the nokia division though but still... lol.

Revenue was down 5.1% which is why the stock price fell.

Last quarter Sony had revenue growth of 3.6% YoY.

One year ago Sony's Q1 had an operating profit of 69.8 Billion yen, and it is safe to expect something similar this year. Stock today was up 1.25%.

Just want to challenge the popular notion on here that Sony is constantly bleeding red ink and MSFT is invincible. You never know lol.

Sony is up 1.25% and is experiencing revenue growth YoY (they are also profitable).

Why challenge it? It's a popular notion because it's more true than not. The Xbox has operated from day one with a blank check; had they been a smaller company they'd likely not be here now.

Hopefully Sony will continue to rebound (slightly), but I wouldn't rush out to getting the confetti just yet :p

Welp

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

Going to need a source on Sony's data, OP.

Right, i agree. But i still see people on here like "Sony need to sell their tv division!!11!" when it is profitable and creates a huge about of revenue

Tables can turn easier than you think :p

The numbers were actually outstanding from Microsoft with larger than expected growth, beating both revenue and profit estimates. Just a large writedown in Nokia being the killer.

Yeah, one reason Microsoft tends to remain strong is they don't often wait around with dropping ventures that are costing them a lot and not panning out. It's simultaneously efficient, callous (to the laid off work force), and probably wise in the long run. If you've too many albatross projects around your neck no job will be safe.

Sony, especially in manufacturing from (certain) electronics to kitchen ware, might want to adopt that policy.
