August 13th UPDATE: Xena reboot confirmed by NBC NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt

- Bob Greenblatt said:

"Yes, we're in the early stages of developing a new take on Xena and we're looking for a writer. We want to do it," Greenblatt told THR on Wednesday night at NBCUniversal's Television Critics Association summer press tour party at Spago.

As THR exclusively reported in July, NBCUniversal International is prepping a Xena reboot with original series executive producers Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi. Sources tell THR that the new, modern Xena would have to have the charisma and charm of Lawless and the smarts of The Hunger Games' Katniss as producers are said to be looking for a sophisticated and smart superhero for a new generation. The potential series is being eyed for 2016.

"I don't think it's just a continuation, but we haven't gotten that far. I think it's a great character, and we should try to figure out how to revive it somehow," Greenblatt said, confirming that "there is a deal with Sam and Rob Tapert to produce, and it's with NBC International."  While the executive noted that it was too early to tell what the focus for a new Xena would be, he said much of the creative would depend on the writer's vision. Sources indicate that the network is meeting with their top choice for a scribe for the potential series, though who that is is being kept under wraps.

- On Lucy Lawless being featured in the Xena reboot, Greenblatt said:

"We'd love to have Lucy be a part of it — if we felt that her presence didn't overshadow the direction we take with it. I'm not sure how she could be part of it if she wasn't playing Xena, and I don't know if that's a direction we'll ever go," he said, noting that he'd be open to having the actress — who is married to Tapert — involved creatively behind the scenes.

Old Update

Lucy Lawless (wife of Rob Tapert as you may know) took to Twitter and denied rumors of a Xena reboot being in the works:

But said she would love to see the series continue or feature someone else.

On the meantime, Lucy Lawless, Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi himself are working on the TV Series sequel to Evil Dead's Army of Darkness that will start airing this Fall in STARZ:

What a disappoinment. Perhaps the interest these rumors garnered could make something happen, hopefully.

The popular Hercules spinoff, under the helming of executive producers Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi, starring Lucy Lawless

is said to be in the very early stages of seeing a reboot.

With Tapert and Raimi again involved in this project, the higher ups at NBC and NBCUniversal International are looking to portray a new Xena that has the charisma and charm of Lucy Lawless and the "smarts" of Katniss from the Hunger Games for a "modern" take of the Warrior Princess and her cult series.

Anyone else here who have seen these series and has an opinion to share?

I have no idea what they mean with that. Having the smarts to make people go crazy for new Xena like JLaw did. As if Lucy Lawless didn't back in the day...

Anyways, IHNFI.

It's hard to forget about her here because there is a channel that has Xena reruns every summer. I just watched an episode two days ago.

pfft all boys are lesbians, unless they're gay. Of course if you wanna see a bit MORE of Lucy Lawless you need to watch Spartacus.

Does Katniss have smarts beyond being good at shooting a bow and arrow and her nature sense? It was mostly her innocence and naivete, manipulated behind the scenes by others, that made her into the Mockingjay. Katniss was a fairly believable character mostly because she wasn't outsmarting everyone with her cunning and astute handling of all situations. Possibly the least competent hero in YA fiction behind Harry Potter, which is what makes both characters so well liked by their target demographic.

This and Hercules were basically my high school years. I kind of hope it happens but I'm worried it will tarnish my memories of the show.

Ah lucky you. The series appears to have been syndicated for a while in the US then stopped according to Wikipedia but maybe the info hasn't been updated. Here in Puerto Rico it was shown once when I was little and not again. I plan on watching it again to revive some memories.

And who said I haven't seen Spartacus already?

Katniss and Mr. Potter are characters that grow to become key in resolving the problems in their stories. Katniss more because she became a symbol and then trains to be competent, Potter because it is in him but he needed to grow and realize his potential.

I don't see the "smarts" of Katniss, specially in comparison to the warrior Xena.

Unless they recast Lucy Lawless as Xena, then no.
