Forums - Microsoft Discussion - AMD Falls Short of Projected Financials, In Position for Rumored Microsoft Acquisition

Nah, Facebook will buy them.

Just like SEGA, AMD needs to go away. They are not relevant companies anymore.

The only reason to buy AMD would be to acquire its patent portfolio, and then dissolving the company.

I disagree. AMD makes nice graphics cards, and their cpus are good too. They aren't bad and if you are short on cash then they are one of your better options for pc builds. also AMD is in the xbone and ps4. Not sure about the wii u though.

Does everyone realize that Microsoft wouldn't have access to the 32bit/64bit licensing agreement if they purchased AMD. That purchase would mean AMD CPUs are dead. It'd be a shame if the next architecture is actually good. If they can find a way to keep the license, then I think with Microsoft backing we could really get some competition into the hardware sector.... I just don't see how that would be possible.

Why won't they have access to the 32-64 bit agreements? I honestly don't know, that's why I'm asking..... I would just like to get some clarification on that, I'm clueless.

The patents behind x86-64 is not transferable on AMD's part in the case of an aquisition ...

They actually said that wouldn't be a problem. http://www.kitguru.net/components/graphic-cards/anton-shilov/amd-x86-license-agreement-with-intel-cannot-block-our-merger-or-acquisition/

Besides, even if it does affect the agreement then chances are they could just renegotiate it straight away, it's beneficial for Intel as well as them and with Microsoft behind them as well it shouldn't be too hard to get a deal done.

If that is true, I would be all for it. AMD with Microsoft backing might just be the hardware market needs. That being said, Kitguru.net isn't what I would consider a high quality source.

I'd much prefer if Samsung acquired them.

I would too since that means AMD get's a ton of cash to put out more new designs and new micro-architectures so they can stop rebadging the crap out of their product lines ...

It gets even better when Samsung has the best available transistors barring Intel but the funny thing here is that AMD won't be able to use HBM anymore since their owner is a competitor to SK Hynix ...

Hmmmmmmm.

Does that mean Sony would go Nvidia for the PS5? Highly doubt they would want MS knowing the specs of their next system.

The license goes both ways. AMD owns the x64 extension to Intel's x86 instruction set. It would be in Intel's best interest to keep the agreement alive.

Yeah, pretty much why I would like to see Samsung buying them - their cash + tech could easily put AMD in position to relatively easy rival both Intel and nVidia...which is only good for us consumers in the end.
