Forums - Sony Discussion - Rocket League: A bigger get for the PS4 than we're giving it credit?

So Rocket League has been out for about 10 days now and it can easily be said that it has been a smashing success up to this point (network connectivity issues excluded). The thing I'm wondering is where this thing will go from here, but first I thought I'd show some stats of its success.

Metacritic score of 85 with a user score of 9.1 on PS4 and a very positive score on Steam with almost 3700 reviews.

A 5 Star score with about 27k votes on the US PS store: https://store.playstation.com/#!/en-us/games/rocket-league/cid=UP2002-CUSA01163_00-ROCKETLEAGUENA01

And another 5 Star score with almost 37k votes on the European store: https://store.playstation.com/#!/de-de/spiel/rocket-league/cid=EP2002-CUSA01433_00-ROCKETLEAGUEEU01?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=ps%20store&utm_campaign=PX+-+PlayStation+-+Brand+-+DE&EMCID=GM300000_store

It also got a 9/10 from Angry Joe yesterday

Steam sales are rising steadily with currently over 20k sales a day: http://steamspy.com/app/252950

PSN sales are of course more tricky to find out, but it stands to reason that normal sales of the game should currently be rather low since it's free on PS+ (which is not bad for the game, since it gave it a popularity kickstart)

What else... the Rocket League subreddit has shown very healthy growth since the games release: http://redditmetrics.com/r/RocketLeague

And general popularity of Rocket League posts on the site has been pretty high as well.

The same goes for Youtube, it's not uber huge (yet) but it's getting good amounts of views: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=rocket+league

Finally the game has even been acknowledged as an official eSport already, something that can really help it in the long run: http://play.eslgaming.com/rocketleague

Bottom line is that it's doing well, the question now would be if the game is just kind of the flavour of the month right now or if it will enjoy longtime popularity and relevance and if Sony would acknowledge that possibility and try to make use of it by for instance entirely blocking an X1/Wii U/NX release.

In my personal opinion this game has all the pieces in place to become an extremely successful and longliving game: It is based on the most popular sport in the world, it is easy to pick up but challenging to master, it can be an extremely competitive game or one that you just play for goofy fun with friends and it comes across very well even when only watched, you can easily tell that the game is fun and you can also tell how challenging some of the stunts that some people pull off are making it a very ideal streaming/youtubeing game (imo this is a very important point). Thanks to the PS+ deal the game has, as already mentioned, also gotten a massive kickstart that just further helps its popularity.

Now I'm not saying people are buying PS4s for this game now (at least not in any meaningful capacity) but if this game continues on its track it can become a huge selling point in a year or so, if Sony manages to completely lock down that exclusivity.

What do you think? Is Rocket League a new evergreen or just a fad?

I wonder how many people even know that there was a predessessor of this game on the PS3 already.

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

Well I for sure didn't. Lol

Definitely getting to way more people this time around.

I got Rocket League for free on PS+ and honestly it's a great game all round (apart from some AI issues). However I doubt it's got the overall impressiveness to be a serious system seller.

Flash Sentry's #1 Fan (unofficially).

The thing that makes Rocket League a great e-sport is that it is a totally level playing field. Everyone has the same equipment and the same maneuvers. It's all pure player skill and nothing else. Pretty much all other e-sports there are elements which advantage or disadvantage a player to some degree independant of player skill.

It's a helluva fun game but I will never have the skill to really compete, So I will almost certainly just stick to the single player competition modes. Still a load of fun though. I will keep playing until I win a season on pro difficulty.

It's really a great game, without PS+ I would never have played this gem.

But I am not sure Microsoft would agree the cross-play between XB1 and steam/PS4 (well except when it's their own game). They still have the usual "come talk to us" bullshit.

War thunder devs: "Microsoft is not allowing cross-play completely; which means [War Thunder] cannot be on Xbox One," Yudintsev told GameSpot at GDC last week in San Francisco."

Microsoft PR:
"For developers interested in enabling cross-platform game play between Xbox One and PC, we work with them closely to meet their development needs and ensure a great user experience."

Now that PS4 can play with PC gamers, Microsoft would have to agree the cross play with...PS4 if they agree with Steam cross play.

Yeah, I was going to say this.   This is the sole reason why FF XIV: ARR is not available on neither the 360 and Xbox One.  If microsoft doesn't change their cross-platform policy, rocket league won't see the light of day on the Xbox One.

I love playing RL, I think I managed to become slightly better than average. I sure wouldn't dare to actively compete in any sort of tournament, but I manage to do well playing with randoms online. Score a goal or three, be an MVP every 3-4 matches.

I am so grateful that this game was a part of PS+, I wouldn't even look at it if I were asked to pay money (and would have made a big mistake in that case). They promised new free maps incoming, that should keep the game very active as well.

As for other consoles, I wouldn't mind if it went over to XOne or Nintendo, they should experience 2015 GOTY as well. Still, those versions would not pose a huge threat to PS4, as it has the time and community size advantage that can never be matched. And I guess thise people would just play on their closed network, but that is enough for them to have a blast anyway.

I wouldn't look too much into it but I think it is a fantastic game and keeping it exclusive on PS4 will definitely be a big plus, as the game handles best with controllers and has a really good split-screen mode.

I've been playing this more than any other release since BloodBorne
