Forums - Politics Discussion - What is the problem with hospital costs in the U.S? - here is the cost of a Snake bite!

Was it a magic snake? Maybe the patient spent like three months in St Mungo's.

That's insane. My friend got bit by the brown recluse spider and was charged about $10,000. They had three antibiotics running all day for a week.

When I go broke my hand, they wanted to charge $400 for x-rays & $200 for  consultation. I went to Mexico, and they did X-rays, consultation, surgery, cast and medication for $200 overall.

My friend broke his arm once, actually a few times. Got the surgery, a cast and he healed perfectly fine. Didn't cost anything though, gotta love living in the UK ;)

What are we even looking at here?  What kind of snake?  What kind of damage?  They were in intensive care and required therapy so I'm guessing it was really bad.  Rattlesnakes can do some absolutely horrible things to human tissue.  The OP tells us nothing.

If you've got a strong stomach, go look up "rattlesnake bite" on google images.

I am happy that there are so few snakes in my part of the world.

Omg, that's crazy. I'm very thankful for free healthcare in Canada then, even if it's not very good.

I do wonder how people are so ignorant of medical costs. Bills are so high because that's how much insurance companies are billed. If you pay on your own, that bill shrinks considerably. If we didn't have emergency rooms full of people who don't have insurance (or those who can't afford their deductible), then these costs wouldn't have a chance to get so high.

There was a comedian once you did a joke about how it was cheaper to get a new kidney by flying to Spain, paying for the new kidney, living in Spain for 3 months during recovery and then flying back than it is to get it done in the US.

I recall reading that somewhere a couple months ago. Maybe 9gag.

And it's completely true.

That is nothing new, people have been doing that for years and they even called it "medical vacations", with people flying to countries with free health care where they caused a situation of risk and went to the hospital to get the treatment.

The funny thing is that countries wanted to make something to stop or minimize this behavior, so if someone comes now to Spain (for example) and does that, the doctors will be able to see his medical record and if they find out that the patient was already diagnosed with that illness, they will take care of him/her, but once the patient is ok, Spain will charge the sum of all the treatment to your country.

Please excuse my bad English.

Must have been a pretty bad bite. My brother was recently in a very severe car accident and he doesn't have any insurance. Broke both arms and dislocated both shoulders, huge lacerations everywhere and extensive damage to his face and one of his eyes. His bill came in around 50k.

I can't imagine a coward like Rajoy saying "hey Obama, you owe me this", though.
