Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Fire Emblem Fates over sexualization is really off putting imo (pics)

There are WRPGs without sexualized characters? Really? Even Fallout has sexualized characters, and the only thing you're complaining about is Fire Emblem.

I'm not complaining about sexualization in games in general, I'm calling out Fates because Fire Emblem literally never had any sexual or suggestive themes or half nudity in any of the games.  I know most WRPG are far more sexual than FE, and that's become an expected trait of RPGs, but Fire Emblem has always been an execption to that thread.  Like I said in the OP, I liked Fire Emblem because it didn't have sexual elements or typical anime cliches characters like you see in most JRPG.  The direction it has gone literally kills all the wholesome authenticity that the originals had.  And what makes it worse is that it wasn't a gradual progession, it's boom, one game it's clean, decent, deep characters, original art, next game it looks like a moe-anime, with anime stereotypes for most of the characters, poorly done perverted fanservice and weak easily digestable plots.

A large portion of why me and many others enjoy FE has been completely changed, and imo not for the best

I'm pretty sure you're exaggerating things. Never had half dressed or sexual or suggestive themes? I doubt that.

Camilla as a character is more of a mother figure than anything. She isn't presented in a sexual way unless you wish to interpret it that way. Further, every picture you have posted is from the accessory shop, which is an entirely OPTIONAL part of the game; should you not wish to see it at all, you don't have to. There is an option in many games to display the main character in swimwear, this is nothing new. If a woman having breasts offends you then I advise you avoid most modern video games altogether.

If you want to interpret something sexually, check out the 'my room' feature where you rub characters' faces/hair with the stylus to "deepen your bonds". Again though, that too is entirely optional.

If you skip these simply because you can optionally buy/view swimwear in an OPTIONALLY built shop, you'll regret it. I've never really enjoyed a JRPG before, including FE: Sacred Stones/Path of Radiance and Xenoblade Chronicles, but Fates (all three of the storylines) is very much worth it. My personal GOTY so far.

To me that's character design and the way both of these characters are handled doesn't put the sexualization to the forefront.

The sexy teacher angle regarding Quistis is a projection derived from a fantasy some players might have but the game doesn't really push that. The scene your gif comes from is basically her sighing because Squall and Seifer have been at it again, there's nothing sexual about it (unless your imagination makes it so).

For example, you could say Irvine plays the sexy cowboy role,  but that wouldn't be true because the game doesn't exploit the character in that way.

One thing you have to keep in mind is there's a difference between sexualization and over-sexualization. Tifa and Quistis are sexualized, there's no denying that but it doesn't cross the line into stuff like what is posted in the OP or that MSGV girl.

Tifa's huge boobs have always been the focus of her character from fans though. Square most likely designed her that way in FF7 to give her this type of attention.

As for Quistis, unlike Irvin it's not just the look. She's the authority type, has a whip (domineering), hits on her student, and visits him in the infirmary while he's injured.

And she looks like she's moaning. Googling Quistis Gif, most of the relevant images that turn up are of this scene. It's a popular gif because people see it as a sexy looking gesture. Not because they're fans of sighing.

Although I agree with you that they're not over-sexualized. At least Quistis. I just disagreed with the "never put forward as a sexual object" part. There's a bit of that as well. As for Tifa's boobs being bigger than her head and bouncing around like crazy in some FMVs, I think that could qualify as being over sexualized.

I don't know Quiet's story yet, but Kojima said something about "You will feel ashamed for questioning the way she dresses once you find out her story."
Though I'm sure she was designed this way to give her this kind of attention as well.

You're really reaching with Quistis. It comes up often because it's one of the only times she features in a FMV. A 3 second bit of her sighing can't possibly be considered being put forward as a sexual object. Even under the most liberal lines.

"We'll toss the dice however they fall,
And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."

Intelligent Systems gets an ultimatum from Nintendo: Make the next game sell or this will be the last one!
After FE:Awakening sells very well and even sometimes is labelled "system seller" the Intelligent Systems team sits down to analyse what made this game more popular than previous games.
Of course they will notice the "waifu simulator" discussions on fan sites. If the fans wants "waifus" and even same gender marriage why not give it to them - if it sells the game.
According to sales in Japan for FE:if/fates this is the way to go - so expect more of the same for the next upcoming game.
This will continue until the original fans gets vocal and demand a proper "modest" FE - then sales probably will drop again.

I have made a wonderful discovery!

There actually is costume break in this game. You can strip your opponent in very special circumstances!

Now it's a real Senran Kagura-like

I like this version of Quistis best:

I really get a bit on the irritated side every time I hear that sexualized images are the Debbil. Many people enjoy them, they are part of human history. The Cavemen, the Greeks, Romans, The Renaissance, people, in general, like looking at the Human form, and you better believe, that if more Homosexual and Female designers were at the helm, you would see more men in oversexualized images of the male form, hell, if you want some proof, check out a BL manga sometime, as they are usually written by women.
