Forums - Gaming Discussion - What's The Best Pokemon Game To Start With?

I've never touched any main series Pokemon game, ever. I've watched like around 20 minutes of X/Y (Don't remember which one) footage. I'm gonna download the Omega/Ruby Alpha/Sapphire demo on the 3DS. So... Which one should I start the series with?

Can't wait for The Zelder Scrolls 3: Breath of The Wild Hunt!

If you like old games and want to know how it all began I would recommend Blue/Fire on the Gameboy rather than Firered/Leafgreen. I started with Blue :)

There are many options:
If you want to start from the real beginning you should take Red/Blue on the GameBoy;

If you want a long story you should buy Gold/Silver/Crystal ;

If you want a good story you should take B2/W2 (usally the sequels are considered better than the original B/W but you should check out B/W before because there are many references);

If you want a challenging Game you should pick either Emerald or one of the games from IV° gen (Diamond/Pearl/PLATINUM/Heart Gold/Soul Silver);

If you want to catch all of 720 of them and learn about Mega Evolution Pick the last entrys in the series as of X/Y and Omega Ruby/Alpha Saphire and after those play the previous games. The oldest the game is the less pokémon are in the game to catch but the game will be harder

Eesh. I definitely wouldn't start with Red, Blue, or Yellow. Gold/Silver/Crystal have aged much better. Fire Red / Leaf Green are good suggestions, though something even newer would also be fine. I don't see what's wrong with simply starting with ORAS.

There are a few things wrong with this post.

Gold/Silver didn't really have a wrong story, in fact their story was extremely simple compared to all subsequent Pokémon games. However, they did have a long campaign and I'm pretty sure that's what you meant.

While Black 2 and White 2 had a good story, the story was better in Black and White. Those had the best story of any Pokémon games by far and along with the sequels made for a very compelling and engaging saga.

For challenge, in my opinion at least nothing came even close to Fire Red and Leaf Green. They got ridiculously challenging in some gym battles and near the end. Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald were pretty hard throughout too. I found the fourth generation to be quite a bit easier, but it still had some challenge in it. Black/White had their tough moments, but were easy for the most part. Anyways, they're not harder the older they are - the first two generations (especially the first) were very easy because of bad AI.

X and Y are good for starters because they have a solid story while sticking closely to the core Pokémon formula (which B/W didn't do), having lots and lots of Pokémon from every generation all over the place, will put a player right into the modern Pokémon game with all its new stuff... and more. Also, this shouldn't be relevant to someone looking to get into the series, but they are also the first games in the franchise to encourage competitive play, and it is really fun and engaging too.

Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire are worthless and should be ignored at all costs. Don't ever buy that piece of garbage. If you want to play the Hoenn games, go back to the original ones on the GBA.

Interesting... I have enjoyed Omega Ruby more than the original.
Different strokes for different folks.

I personally enjoyed having more areas and Pokemon added into the game.

Given that the OP is a newcomer, I would definitely recommend playing the new Pokemon games, whether they be X/Y or Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire.
Why? Because they are easier to own, legitimately.

Maybe Fire Red/Leaf Green. That's the best start if you want pokemon in its most basic/simplest form. That are the Gold/Silver series. That gen is just the best ; )

good summary Hiku. i was planning to play again Pokemon after I've played Yellow. 95% completion though, but can't find the remaining pokemons back then.

so i may start with the new ones X/Y or ORAS.

Well, as someone who started on pokemon crystal back in the day (I had played bits and pieces of red and blue on a friends gameboy before, but that doesn't really coun't imo) I'm biased, but have to recommend the heartgold/soulsilver remakes.
They are extremely well done and offer all the modern gameplay conveniences without sacrificing anything that made the originals awesome. They also had the best rival of all Pokemon games imo and the story, while simple compared to later entries in the series, hit the sweet spot between grand and believable for me. It's also one of the meatiest pokemon campaigns to date, and in my opinion sort of offers you the best of all worlds. (Not to mention the awesome twist at the 'end' of the game.)

If that's not really you cup of tea, I'd say you will be fine just picking up X/Y and if you like Pokemon just work your way through the older games from there. What's nice about X/Y is the customizability of your avatar, the super easy trading options, if you wanted to get into that and that they are very accessible to newcomers in general.
