Forums - Gaming Discussion - Alexandre's first review ever... In english! Doom Troopers (SNES)

Maybe you guys don't know, but I really love to write reviews... But only in portuguese. I never wrote a full review in english... Until now!

Yes, that's my first (and maybe last) attempt to make a game review in english! I choose Doom Troopers for SNES, one of my games. I hope you guys enjoy it!

Doom Troopers is an Side-Scrolling Shooter released for SNES and Genesis in 1995 by Adrenalin Entertainment and published by Playmates. The version analyzed here is the SNES one. Your mission, as one of two commandos is to fight a evil horde of mutants and zombies, traveling to different planets in order to avoid the extinction of mankind. This game is based on Mutant Chronicles series.

The gameplay feels like a traditional sidescrolling shooter: Both characters can walk, jump, and shoot. You can also walk and shoot at the same time, or hold a button to lock and aim. There's a melee attack that you can use in close combat, and a grab movement. When grabbing a enemy, you can execute him by shooting merciless, or throw him away.

Now, about the characters... Mitch Hunters has a machine-gun capable of rapid fire, while Max Steiner uses two guns, with alternating fire. You start a level with 100 ammo. Some enemies drop ammo clips when defeated, but if you have less than 10 ammo, your weapon slowly recharge to 10. You can also find ammo and health packs inside boxes along the levels.

Also, you can find sub-weapons too. There's two types of then: Blue and red. Each character has his own sub-weapon. Mitch can shoot missiles that cut enemies in half. The red version is a homing missile. Max can shoot fireballs that burns enemies into ashes. The red version causes a explosion, hitting nearby enemies. Remember: You gain 10 sub-weapons with each item, but you lost them if you die.

I want to talk about the violence in this game. Yeah, there's a lot of it. Every enemy is killed with a festival of blood and pain. Some of them loses parts of their body (Head, legs, arms) before dying for real. When this happens, the enemies will change their actions. For example, one regular enemy is shooting at you. You cut his head, and he will start shooting blindly. That's a very cool thing.

Other enemies will agonize before dying. There's a particular one that loses his leg and start screaming in pain before disappearing in a pool of blood. Yeah, the game is that cruel.

About the level design, one thing I like about Doom Troopers is that every single level has a different gimmick that makes it feels very different to the previous. For example, at the second segment of the first stage, there's a blimp in the background that uses a searching light in the foreground. If he finds you, he will shoot missiles at you. In other particular level, you will have one minute to escape a building about to explode.

The graphics in Doom Troopers are very colorful, I have no complaints about it. There's also some cool effects at certain areas. The first level feels very similar to the jungle at the first Donkey Kong Country.

Well, about the soundtrack... I really, really love it! Seriously, guys, Doom Troopers has one of my favorite SNES soundtracks. The only bad thing about it is that this game doesn't have a lot of songs. Even the final boss uses the same battle theme from every level. Well, I don't think this game had a huge budget, to be honest.

I think the only thing that really bothers me at this game is its lenght. Doom Troopers is short. And I mean, very short. In fact, you can beat it in like 30 minutes at your first try.

After all, Mutant Chronicles: Doom Troopers is not a bad game. By the contrary, if you like blood and gore, or just want a great co-op experience, you will certainly enjoy it.

Mutant Chronicles: Doom Troopers (Super Nintendo)
Overall Rating: 8.0 (Great)

Have you posted your Portuguese reviews online? I may able able to understand them with my knowledge of Spanish, and wouldn't mind reading them. Overall, it isn't too shabby for your first review in English!
