I put Atari above all because it was Atari that... started it all. They were the forerunners and blazed the trails for everyone else.
A lot of people. Steve Wozniak (sic?), Shigeru Miyamoto, Nolan Bushnell? I dunno. If there was a gaming "Mount Rushmore" I'd like to see this names on it.
Gamers have done the most for gaming.
Nintendo is selling their IPs to Microsoft and this is true because:

That's really tough, actually.
The reason we got home consoles in the first place was because of the arcade boom. At the forefront of that were probably Atari and Midway. Namco, too.
Then we had the first massively popular home console with the Atari 2600.
After the crash, what kept gaming alive was, again, arcade games. Capcom's Street Fighter was a massive boost to the industry, as was Mortal Kombat. Sega was also very important.
I think it's between Atari and Midway. I give the nod to Atari for popularizing the home console first.
Ralph Baer, the inventor of video game consoles. If it weren't for him (Atari also stole the idea of Pong from him) who knows what would have came from gaming?
For me it's Magnavox (Who created it), Nintendo (Who save it), and Sony (Who popularized it).
A handheld gamer only (for now).
If you're going to go with one person, it absolutely has to be Miyamoto. Company is more debatable. I'd say Nintendo.
