Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Now that Satoru Iwata (RIP) has passed away, what do you think will change at Nintendo?

RIP for sure, but he was ill for a while and I am sure they have been looking into replacements for a long time. With the 3DS not being as huge as the DS and the Wii U struggling, and his illness it has to have been a thought.

How much did he actually control? What was some of his policies that others with power in the company did not approve of?

Can life without Iwata in charge of Nintendo, now that he is gone, be different? Better?

Again rest in peace sweet Japanese king, May your legacy live forever!

What say you?

I've remained silent on this subject out of respect for Mr. Iwata, but now that it's been a day, I will just get one thing out of the way before I respond. For an OP to pose a question as to whether things might be different/better within a few hours of the news breaking about his death, IMO is insensitive, and a despicable show of disrespect.

Although I don't agree with it, I understand the logic behind the moderators' decision to keep this thread open, despite many saying that posting it was too insensitive, and too soon.  But it's a fact of life that mod decisions of any site can end up representing the stance of the site as a whole, intentionally or otherwise, and I'm afraid that for a few hours that particular mod decision looked far from good. Fortunately, that has been balanced now by the gracious act of honouring Mr. Iwata through the changing of the VGChartz logo.

Back on topic.

Nintendo haven't named an interim president, but from their notification of personnel change it's clear that Miyamoto and Takeda will continue in their positions in the meantime until further announcements are made.

As for change - in the emotional sense of course it will run deeply and touch all Nintendo employees and employees of associated groups, worldwide. The dynamic will change, the general feeling will change, but they will carry on. As Sakurai tweeted:

""It's not a normal day and it's not a normal mental state, but I came to work and threw myself into development as normal."
"It's also for Iwata-san. I'm doing what I have to do."

I doubt that Nintendo will do an about-turn on any current decisions and ongoing strategies, such as the NX, QoL and the partnership with DeNA. In the hands of someone new, of course there will be differences in the way that these projects are seen through. But it will be difficult to measure how different, better or worse it is handled compared with how 'Iwata might have done it'. All I hope is that whoever takes the helm, the company thrives and continues to do things 'their way', despite the catcalls of all the armchair-CEOs out there.

Nintendo, don't ever stop being different.

Around the Network

"Different" is not really working for Nintendo nowadays, isn't it? If they don't want to repeat the Wii U-level sales disaster they have to take a page from competition's book.

Nothing will change because the new CEO will probably be on the same mindset as Iwata, unless some new face with better knowledge of modern gaming appears and takes the role of CEO things will remain the same.

I honestly haven't a clue. I don't have any idea what Iwata did or the decisions he made as Nintendo's president.

I'm still in tears literally. But I honestly hope things will change for the best.
