Forums - Gaming Discussion - When will Microsoft leave the console business?

Its a good question. I am honestly surprised they havent quit yet. Not sure what their plan is going forward, but it seems to be windows 10 on multiple systems. Perhaps they will go back to beeing that PC developer, but in a multi-device platform. Some have said here that the Xbox will be that device for the living room, but given they sell it at a loss... why even continue that? I am unsure they will be around for another console round if the multi-device thing works.

Actually, maybe this windows can go into the next Sony and/or Nintendo systems. It sure sounds like there is more to win for them with that model.

I don't think they would leabe the console business due to finiancial problems, but I do think they will leave maybe in a generation or 2 because they will want to make the next best thing than a console.

By that logic, we need to ask when sony is leaving the home console business, because they lost the most money during the gen 7 era

Sega should do a Dreamcast 2 and the 3 current companies drop out and just make software.

And it should be android base and do mobile so if games only.

I could see Microsoft migrating Xbox into Windows at some point.

It would be better but why would Sony and Nintendo agree to that?

i think maybe maybe maybe ( i hope not) after this gen because of windows 10 i dont see any other reason for them leaving

I don't actually think they should I am trying to point out that many people say that Nintendo should and that it doesn't make sense for Nintendo to leave when you consider they are doing better than Microsoft since they have enetered the console wars.

That is a rather arbitrary way of looking at it.  You could also look at it and say they have been outsold by Microsoft two of the three generations Microsoft has been around.  Also, the past is the past, currently Nintendo is doing much worse than Microsoft and that is why you get the comments you get.  Not to mention the fact that Nintendo has trouble getting support for their platforms from anybody else but themselves and Microsoft doesn't.  I can see all sorts of arguments that make a lot more sense as to why people would think Nintendo should get out of the hardware business.

personally, I don't think they should.  I am pretty happy with the balance as it stands.  I think a three way competition is best for the industry.

I'm pretty sure Xbox One is their last console. There's absolutely nothing stopping them from adding Xbox one features to Windows 10, and vice versa, so that you can have a TV PC easily controllable with a keyboard/mouse, gamepad, or remote. The only downside to this approach is that there is a HUGE population out there that prefers to have a game console marketed toward them, not a TV PC that can play games. Maybe that will change in a few years though.

I hope nor mcrsft nor sony nor nintendo quit the console business because they make different games for different tastes and competition is good for the industry
