Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Microsoft dropping the name 'Xbox' from more things (Xbox Music, Xbox Video)

(I saw this shit coming!)

Is the future of Xbox looking great to you guys? Do you see another 2 gens for Xbox coming? Xbox One is doing okay but we all know Microsoft love winning, and if they're not winning AND not making money (companies want one or the other) they may put everything onto Windows 10?

Or this could mean for Xbox:

- Nothing, just renaming music

- Nothing, just renaming movies and video

- Nothing, just renaming Xbox to games

Nintendo is selling their IPs to Microsoft and this is true because:

I'm not really sure why they thought associating the game brand with movies and videos was a good idea. Even assuming 85 million active owners of Xbox 360 at its peak that is a tiny tiny fraction of people who listen to music and watch videos. So trying to appeal to non-gamer music and video consumers using a well known game brand seems pretty counter-productive. I can see why MS would not want to try to establish a whole new brand. But non-gamers really don't want to associate themselves with game brands. Game brands do not have any sort of cool factor outside of the gaming community, they have a nerdy-geeky, uncool factor to them.

But Groove? Seriously, a term from the 60s and 70s for the music app? That sounds bad too.

If they keep chanting the names of these things nothing will ever stick.

I just think that Phil is trying to condense the Xbox brand back into a gaming brand and less an "entertainment" brand. That's all.

What is this, the 70s?

That's the idea I was responding to when I started with "Or...". :P We don't know if that will ever happen, the future seems to point towards videogame streaming but who knows?

I wonder if someday Micro will take a look at Xbox and say: "We should go back to our "software first company" philosophy", but I doubt that is going to happen as long as Xbox is successful or brings out some benefit for the company.

This is the only possible explanation.

They're likely in the process of merging the Xbox brand into "Windows 10 gaming". If Xbox live gets renamed then that confirms this. I don't see them dropping the console though.
