Forums - General Discussion - Parents forget baby while in the beach and baby drifts away to the sea

In Turkey:

YouTube video description:

"Incredible pictures have emerged of a baby being rescued from the open ocean after she floated a kilometre out to sea when her parents forgot they left her in the water.

The Turkish Coastguard was called into action today after beachgoers and the child's parents realised in horror that strong winds and ocean currents were swiftly pulling her towards Greece.

Kept alive only because she was sitting inside a child's flotation device, 10-month-old Melda Ilgin was pulled from the ocean when rescuers dived into the water to catch her.

The ordeal began when the Ilgin family took a trip to the beach near the town of Kucukkuyu, in Turkey's south west coast, BGN News reported.
Sitting her in a child's flotation device, they left her in the water while they relaxed.

However, strong northerly winds sent her offshore and sailing quickly south towards the Greek island of Lesbos.
Horrified beachgoers then realised the gravity of the situation and after several attempts to rescue her themselves, called the coastguard.
Travelling almost a kilometre offshore, rescuers dived into the water and pulled her from the sea.
She was soon reunited with her parents, who quickly ushered her from the scene as a gathered crowd looked on in bewilderment."

Luckily the coast guard came and the baby was rescued safe and sound....

WTF?

What do you think about this story?

Do you think something should have been done to the parents, for negligence?

Do you think there is a possibility that, in spite of the baby girl's young age, she could have had a very defined sexual preference and somehow managed herself to swim towards Lesbos for a particular interest?

Thanks to its happy ending, this is a funny story, although I'm sure the parent will ty to never, ever, talk about it .

And while the parents care about her, as it's proven by the fact that they used a special floating device and not a simple rubber ring float, I think the turkish authorities should kept an eye on them just to be sure that this has been a isolated case or to see if they have a tendency to forget her in other places (park, car, etc) too.

Please excuse my bad English.

Wow. Social Services should get involved but I don't think there is anything like that in Turkey.

- Just glad the child was safe and sound. Obviously, it could've been much worse.

- Nah. This seems like a one-time thing. Negligence to me is repeated incidents in a pattern of abuse. In this case, the parents got busy or whatever and their baby drifts out to sea. Sure, pretty stupid, but not necessarily negligent. I'm sure it won't help the parents by posting the video to Youtube where a billion strangers can comment things like "Rot in hell, shitty parents!" and "Take their baby away and lock them in prison FOREVERRRRRR!!" I'm sure they're sorry enough that it happened and it (probably) won't again.

- LOL. I wouldn't have taken time to comment on this thread, but this was just too funny. Unless you're being serious, in which case, I'd have to say it's possible but highly unlikely.

It'll be awhile before I figure out how to do one of these. :P

I don't know about that, but then maybe this was an unfortunate event that, like spurge says,

I bet they'll never make that mistake again!

hopefully won't happen again. You know, cases like this make you wonder, if indeed parents by allowing their child to get into such a dangerous situation once, is it best for this little person to be taken from their family to another unknown fate or allowed their parents a chance to learn from this experience? Some people don't repeat actions after a negative experience. I mean, relocating this girl with other people is as much as an uncertain fate as letting her parents keep her. Because her parents were stupid like this to put her in danger doesn't necessarily mean that they will again. Maybe they will, but maybe not.

But then well known and publicized cases like this often become public discussions that the authorities end up feeling pressured against and may take action not for what could be best for the child, but because they must show that they take action in front of the eyes of the public, I don't know if this will be the case there, possibly not.

Maybe extreme cases of continiued patterns of abuse would be the moment in which authorities take action and remove custody from parents. A case like this should be perhaps left to the situation of telling her parents to "not be stupid again."

yeah I just can't fanthom how things like this can happen, people in charge of little kids forgetting about them. Same goes for people leaving their babies locked inside a car and having them die of asphyxia or heat. I know it may not be intentional from their part but when I am in charge of little kids I am always stressed and mindful of what the little kids are doing and can't keep them away from my mind because of worry. I guess people work differently.

I can imagine the parents telling the baby about this when the girl has a kid and goes to the beach .
