But the PS1 didn't just win by default. They were brilliant in the way they were able to exploit a demograph (young adults) that hadn't been exploited before. All of a sudden, gaming was "cool" and not just something a nerd did. I remember, I was about 16 when it launched. Gaming was accepted in highschool after that and become a part of pop culture.

That, to me, is the genius behind the PS1.

By not making stupid moves, PS kinda won by default. Sega and Nintendo were making bad moves at the time... and still do.

Young adults were going to be gamers regardless of Playstation because many were already gamers. Great mature games were coming from 3rd parties, not Sony. Gaming was apart of pop culture even before Playstation. I don't buy this argument, I saw plenty of teenagers and young adults crowding the arcades.

I agree, Sony certainly deserves credit for making consoles popular in Europe and developing countries but in America/Japan console gaming was already pretty huge and growing.

Popular games like Mortal Kombat & Doom that came out a few years before Playstation kinda show that Mature gaming was already on the way in by the mid-90s.

I was 16, and grew up with an NES, SNES, Sega Genesis and Sega CD. But by the time PS1 came out, I had moved on. All my friends moved on as well. Back then, gaming was what you did when you were a kid and when you grew up, you grew OUT of gaming entirely.

I can remember playing football with friends and there was some 18-19 year old guys playing with us. It was winter 1995. One of them asked us if we were going to get this new console called a Playstation. We all looked at eachother like, GAME SYSTEM?!!? It shocked us that someone their age would ask something like that and still play games. Never the less, we looked into it and all got Playstations.

That's the thing that I credit Sony with the most.

With the games it had at the time 18-19 year old guys in 1995 would not have cared much about the playstation unless they were already some kind of gaming enthusiast.

Why spend $300 for a console with one controller when you could spend 50 cents/per game at an arcade.

Arcades did it better and for cheaper in 1995.

Arcades were a better option for young adults because they used less time, less money and required less commitment.

In 1994 Businessweek reported that arcade revenue was 7 Billion USD, while home console revenue was 6 Billion USD.

It wasn't till later on when arcades were declining that young adults had to go to consoles for their racing/flying /fighting/shooting games fix.

In America arcades were popular back then and only with their death or decline could the Playstation control that demographic.

Yes but I would credit PS1 for KILLING arcades. I don't think PS1 is the result of arcades commiting mass suicide.

Sony came in when the competition was weak. Also, Sony was in a finanically better position. PS1 won by default, N64 and Saturn were a mess.

Which is why Im glad MS came into the console fray. The industry needed a company willing to take big risks even against a mega company like Sony.

Wait... are you calling Nintendo and Sega weak after SNES/Mega Drive? O.O

SNES / Mega Drive were super strong when Sony launched PlayStation and Saturn/N64 did put a tie a tie competition...

No... I'm saying Saturn and N64 were weak follow ups. Both sold significantly less than their predecessors because of mistakes made by Sega and Nintendo.

That made it easier for Playstation to dominate. Especially since Sony was embracing 3rd parties and CDs were cheap to produce.

Except Sega was already doing all this. Look at Sony's initial marketing campaign ... it's all a Sega rip-off. Even Crash Bandicoot is basically a Sonic knock-off. Sega was already marketing to older audiences, that's not something Sony invented. Hell, even Nintendo was doing it, Nintendo in the 90s was in a lot of ways more progressive than they are today. They would do things like GoldenEye, NBA Courtside, outbid Sony for the Star Wars game contract, Killer Instinct, etc.

No, arcades were still pretty relevant during the life of PS1. The generation after is when we really started getting the arcade experience at home.

Dreamcast was popular for fighting games because it was delivering them at par with arcades.
