Forums - Movies & TV - How do you feel about John Boyega being the lead character in Star Wars?

Now, I am not a racist-but I have been reading mixed receptions from different people. I am trying to understand why. It seems people are not comfortable with a black guy playing a Luke Skywalker role. For my part, I think its good that a franchise that minorities get a starting roles as opposed to token or minor roles.

What are your thoughs?

PS: Even if Daisy becomes the main character-Boyega still stars along with Oscar Issac.

I think it's awesome, I saw Attack the Block years ago so I was already familiar with him.

This is a series that is downright notorious for having almost no black characters (or non-white human characters in general). It's fine to have a mostly white cast but when your franchise is the butt of ridicule to this extent you have a problem. Casting Boyega was a good first-ish step in fixing that problem. I think he's a great choice regardless of his ethnicity.

I watched Attack The Block and I think the guy has no charisma or showed any range.

As for casting minorities, Hollywood only casts white or black male leads and it's been that way for longer than I was alive so it's nothing has changed.

Is he the main protagonist in the movie or one of the main characters?

So long as his conditioning improves and he doesn't spend the entire trilogy mouth-breathing I'm fine with it.

Do stormtroopers not jog? The empire's military has gotten rather lax in its physical fitness requirements.

Every time I have seen him in the trailers he is sweaty, confused, heavily breathing, and looks lost.

Not as bad as Hayden, but looks pretty bad. Hayden (and Little Annie - Jake Lloyd) set the bar so low no one can go under it.

I don't think the new Big Three (Daisy, John, and Oscar) can carry this franchise unfortunately. Episode VII will appeal to people because of the return of Luke, Han, and Leia but after that the franchise will be pretty much done.

By the way I can't believe they are still using Stormtroopers. How unoriginal. This movie seems like a bad fan fiction.

Some say he is the new Luke. The new Big Three is: Daisy as Rey, John as Finn, and Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron (what a dumb name).

I  think Episode VII will be huge because of Luke, Han, and Leia but I think after Episode VII no one will care.

I doubt that he's the main character. Poe would more likely be it. I personally think there should be more hispanics or asians in films to be fair. I read that disney will be ignoring the expanded universe (a series of books, i believe) with these films. In some sense, fans may just ignore this new trilogy because it doesn't follow the established storyline.

Ah, the classic "I'm not a racist ... but let me open up a racist can of worms" schtick.

Who cares who the lead character is. I'm more interested in whether or not the movie will suck like the last three did.
