Forums - Nintendo Discussion - What COULD save the Wii U? It's pretty simple

I love the Wii U as much or more than anyone, but there is no saving it. Even if those things you mention came to fruition by the end of this year with a spectacular advertising campaign, the Wii U is done in this race. I think at best, it should be considered by XB1, PS4, and PC owners as their secondary system because their are so many truly unique gaming experiences to be had on Wii U.

While more good games will definitely boost the Wii U, I doubt it would 'save' it. The only thing that I can think of is a price drop and having 3rd party support, but that is very unlikely..

Nothing can save the Wii U at this point.

1. Metroid Prime 4 - Obvious why

2. Animal Crossing U - This would definitely help boost a lot of units

3. Yokai-Watch U - Now THIS would save the Wii U in Japan at least. Like it would sell pretty damn amazing. (Yokai-Watch is selling better than Pokemon in Japan. Not sure if it will sell great in the west, but it would boost Wii U in Japan)

4. Pokemon Red/Blue HD remake - This would boost sales practically everywhere

5. Nintendo making a deal with Capcom to release an exclusive Wii U Monster Hunter. If it was Monster Hunter 5, it would no doubt boost a ton. Especially in Japan.

1. Really? Even on systems that sold very well (NES, SNES, Wii) Metroid didn't sell huge numbers, so I don't expect it would help to save Wii U unless it had a porn minigame where you get to bone Samus in whatever manner you wanted. According to VGC the best selling Metroid game ever was on GC, and we all know how well GC sold.

2. Maybe, I really have no clue about this franchise. But it seems to be wildly popular on handhelds and fairly popular on home consoles, so an Animal Crossing on Wii U seems like a no-brainer.

3. Wii U doesn't need saving in Japan, it's doing well enough there, though arguably home consoles in general need saving. It needs saving outside of Japan so I would say Nintendo are better off putting resource into something that will wow people everywhere other than Japan. I don't think Yokai Watch would do that.

4. Pokemon is a handheld franchise, when it has made an appearance on home consoles it has sold well, but it still only sells to a fraction of franchise fans, so it has obviously never really drawn people to buy the home console.

5. Again with the handheld franchises, and again with the very Japan-centric franchises. No, because Wii U doesn't desperately need help in Japan, and MH houtside of Japan is only marginally better of an idea than Yokai Watch. But also history has proven that MH is only really popular on handhelds and only modestly popular on home consoles. Capcom pissed off a fanbase when moving MH from PSP to 3DS. They would piss off the fanbase even more moving from handheld to home console.

What Nintendo needs is more new games, like Splatoon. Tapping the wells of existing franchises won't save Wii U, because none of those wells saved GC.

EDIT: I am not asking for what is possible, what won't happen, what might be possible etc.

I am not asking if it would be better for Nintendo to save these for the Wii U's successor or not.

All I am saying with this post is what the Wii U needs in order to be saved. Regardless of probability.

How is Metroid being an "obvious why" reason to boost sales on the Wii U when Metroid Prime 3 released on the Wii's massive 100m install base and didn't even sell 2 million. I understand you might want a new Metroid but let's not act like it will be a huge system seller all of a sudden. It would be good for the people who already own a Wii U but I don't see it boosting a lot of hardware, especially if it couldn't do it on a 100m install base, why would it do it on a barely 10m install base?

Also I don't think there is any "saving" the Wii U anymore at this point. Almost all third party has left the system and it's down to Nintendo to just keep supporting it as best as they can and maybe get the occasional third party exclusive on there.

In my opinion the best thing Nintendo can do at this point is to just keep the core Nintendo fans who bought a Wii U happy. Keep supporting it with games like Splatoon and other franchises, so that way they will feel satisfied when the Wii U cycle ends and NX gets announced, whatever it may be.

Then with NX they need to re-gain third party support and go on from there.

I don't think any of the games you listed could save the Wii U.

a little deal with some 3rd party to get some key releases can save it

After hours upon hours of careful thinking, painstaking calculations, and unprecedented research I may have found a way to possibly save the Wii U. Now keep in mind this may not work but this is the ONLY way to save the Wii U.

Give it out for free.

If Nintendo doesn't do this the Wii U's chances of a comeback are a good as the Dreamcast making a comeback right now.

None of those games are bigger than mario kart 8/ smash Wii u. Monster hunter 5 is the only game there that would appeal to non-nintendo fans, so it is the only one of those games to actually make an impact in hardware sales.

The only game that can "save" the wii u is mario maker, as it seems to be the best gamepad centric game, with a huge ip, with a big concept of player creation. However, by "save" I mean on track to be more than 3/4 of gamecube'a lifetime sales. At this point nothing can make the wii u catch up to Xbox one let alone ps4

Animal Crossing has sold more than Smash in Japan and almost WW. Smash Wii U was at a disadvantage due to a 3DS version being released. It would have another 2.5m sales or more if there was no 3DS version.

Metroid would give a boost in NA and Europe. Not a huge one, but good one.

Mario kart 7 also sold more than mario kart 8, not to being better, just because it has a bigger install base to work with. Animal crossing would mostly sell to nintendo fans who probably already have a wii u.

Metroid would give a boost, but pretty much any wii u release will give a boost, mainly to counter the poor sales during the constant drought. A huge far cry from "saving the console."

As I said, mario maker is the last thing that will provide a really meaningful boost, but at best it will only lead the Wii u to maybe catch up to gamecube lifetime sales
