Forums - Gaming Discussion - Stealth vs survival horror, which of these do you prefer?

Stealth definitely. Metal Gear Solid, by far, being my favorite series of the genre, closely followed by Hitman and then Splinter Cell.

In both of these game genres the object of the game is not to take part in combat, but to avoid combat for the most part.

Examples of each

Stealth - Metal Gear, Splinter Cell and Assassin's Creed

Survial horror - Resident Evil, Silent Hill and Clock Tower

Fix

Assassin's Creed is not even close to be a stealth.

A better example are Deus EX, Hitman, Dishonored ecc...

Anyway, stealth all time. Splinter cell and Deus EX are my favourite.

Stealth isn't really a genre. It's more like a gameplay style. The Last of Us is a Survival Horror with stealth elements for example.

Still if I must choose I'm a Survival Horror fan so I'll go with it. Although I miss the times of Fatal Frame/Project Zero.

Survival horror by a huge margin.

All I'm going to say is fuck you man! You can't do this to me! Both Metal Gear Solid and Resident Evil are my two favorite all time series. You are an asshole for posting this! Seriously how could you?! Ugh the story and characters are phenomenal in both! At least Revelations 2 combines the best of both worlds! You better watch out because Barry is gunna back stab you while Natalia drops a brick on your head as SHE THREW IT ON THE GROUND. Snake will probably do some things with his "solid snake" to you. Though you'd never know because he's a ninja like that. Also if you think that's bad...... Wesker say's hi in advance.

ps. LMAO I don't actually hate you but damnit this is ironic!

Both genres are fantastic! Each of them have games that are great and others that aren't. The gamplay differs in pretty much all of the games in each genre. In many ways it's the characters and story that really pull me into those worlds. The games I mentioned above give me the option to play anyway I desire. I can play MGS without stealth if I wanted to! I prefer the stealth elements in Uncharted 2 and 3 than I do in Splinter Cell where I am forced to play by their bullshit rules. For me it's about the choice! The flexiblity in both genres and I will not pick one because I love them both for different reasons and on a damn near equal level! XD On a personal level this is a dick post, but it's a great thing to talk about! ^.^ So it's nice to see this! :) Btw you're awesome so DON'T get the wrong idea. You're still an asshole for making me debate with myself on this tho!

It's funny, I was trying to think of my 10 favourite video game franchises but I couldn't decide whether to put Resident Evil or Metal Gear into it.

I know what you mean. Heck it felt like you tried to rip my heart out and crush it XD I have other top favorites as well like Metroid, Zelda, Uncharted, Halo and more. Though those two share number 1 spot and have a huge place in my heart. MGS Twin Snakes believe it or not helped me through a depression. Both series have had major impacts on me on a personal level. I think they will always remain my favorites, I even liked RE6 unlike most people. I view it more or less like Fast and Furious of the Resident Evil series and I know it is focused on the protagonist and how they interact with each other and not the villains like most of the games. I didn't like MGS Peace Walker though. 1 and 4 are ironically my favorites and 3 and 2 are phenomenal. I love all the Resident Evil's some more than others. 4, 5, and Revelations 2 are big ones for me. The original and 0 were fantastic. 2 was awesome! Fuck it I like them all okay?! :D I never was able to get my hands on RE3 Nemesis :'( Don't rub it in XD Sorry if I talked about the games out of order :P

I would say stealth, only because of assassin's creed. I haven't played much survival horror besides the last of us, if you even consider that survival horror.

Neither of those games fit those genres that well. AC is more of an action adventure with some stealth in it. TLOU is more an action survival with some stealth in it.

Tenchu, thief and splitter cell are proper stealth games. Dead space, silent hill and the evil within fit the horror survival genre perfectly.

Yeah i know.  The only reason I called Assassin's Creed stealth is because it was in the OP as stealth.
