If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

And shepherds we shall be,

For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti. -----The Boondock Saints

Tetsuya Nomura has already hinted that it won't be turn based, he said he can't imagine making a game with such great visuals and having the characters just standing in a line waiting for their turn to strike. But having said that I think there's a small chance SE could make it an option, they know deep down that 80-90% of the players of the first game will want this battle system and to be fair it's a very very simple battle system so it won't be hard to do alongside another action based system in which you could be given the choice before you start a new game or even change it in an in-game option.

I guess we will see, a remake shouldn't change the very gameplay a game was based on. Turn based with ATB, although I have my doubts.

Hmm, pie.

Honest to god turn-based or ATB is just simply too archaic ...

It took SE long enough to give Final Fantasy an intuitive combat system with XV ...

Let FF VII become the way it was meant to be played ...

Higher quality sounds, higher quality graphics, no more random encounters, a large and persistently connected world is what this remake needs so giving it current gen graphics simply won't do it for me ...

I'd argue for an ATB with more movement during the fights as Nomura pointed out it'd be weird to see HD models just walking a few step forwards and shooting for sole animation.

Anyways I wouldn't worry too much about the remake staying true to the original, as the three names announced so far are all part of the original pre-production commitee. IMO the things that will change are the things they couldn't do at the time of FFVII due to a lack of staff and technological means.

I have a sneaking suspicion that it will be an ARPG like FFXV, and that will piss a lot of people off.

It'll also make me very happy, because on the whole, fuck turn based battling. (he saids with Pokemon Showdown open on the next tab)

I agree with that notion, fuck turn-based battling, 90% of the time, seriously, the only JRPG games I've felt like I was actually playing instead watching are the Mario RPGs, everything else feels way too reliant on  luck and random events outside your own control for me to even consider them a game.

Persona 3 FES was an exception for me but that's mostly because of the attachment I'd developed with the characters, but even then, I didn't even finish the game because of how simple and repetitive the gameplay got, which is also a problem with 99% of JRPGs. Fuck, man, this whole genre is flawed.

I'm now filled with determination.

For me the best thing would be, if it would remain turn-based, but i don't think they will let it the way it was

I'm a die hard fan of the Final Fantasy series, and I'm totally fine with the fact that if I want to play the game in its original form, I already have that version ready to be played.

I just don't get this or how hardcore fans of FF7 could find this acceptable unless there was an option to choose which type of combat you wanted. Changing the combat and making it more modern and accessible will just tarnish the remake and take away the magic of the original.

The magic of the original lies in the original. This is not a port, or an enhanced port. It's a complete remake. I see nothing wrong with having some things updated/altered/made fresh, etc...

If you want the magic of the original, play the original. I don't see what's wrong with that.

i'd say to satisfy everyone make the combat full active like ffxv but include an option to scale it down to a turn based somewhat grandia style combat where movements are done automatically.
