So recently. we've seen a trend where game publishers have been reliant on "crowdfunding" to fund their games. Sony has been a big supporter of crowdfunding, and I worry they'll start this trend. I don't want to start funding the next Uncharted, Rachet and Clank games because it offsets risk. And it isn't just Sony, what if EA, Activision, Ubisoft, Capcom, Sqare, ect start doing this? And if Nintendo or Microsoft does it? Well I'll be throwing the biggest hissy fit this site has ever seen.
But in all seriousness, this crowdfunding concept was mean't for small indie studio's who wanted to get their creation out, but needed other people's help in order to achieve that. Now, its being abused by large companies simply to offset risk to the consumer, its disgusting. And you could argue its only optional, but I speak out of principle. And what happens if it goes all bad? Its fully funded, but never see's the day of light? OOPS!!! They'll send out PR BS telling us how the game was having problems, blah blah blah, we stole your money, so suck it up (this won't be a real PR statement, but that's pretty much what it'll mean).
Anyway, the point is, big companies shouldn't be allowed to crowdfund games (in my opinion). They have billions of dollars behind their backs, and shouldn't get into gaming if they can't afford it. Leave crowdfunding for small indie studio's, and just fund your own games.
Edit: Now I think some people are not understanding this thread. Legally, they can do whatever. But I mean for the right incentives. Should gamers accept this? Should they "allow" these companies too do this? That's what it means. Hope this clarifies some stuff.
