Forums - Gaming Discussion - How much better do PS2 games look upscaled on original PS3 in HD?

Been thinking about getting a backward compatible PS3 and using it to play PS2 games. Thing is I want to know if it is worth the outlay(original NTSC PS3 with backwards compatability, step down/up convertor to run on 240v here, buying NTSC games). Are the graphics much improved when the PS3 upscales them and is run using a HDMI cable into a 1080P TV? I'm not expecting earth shattering results but surely there would be a nice difference like running a dreamcast through VGA or Gamecube through component(or Wii with component)? Is the aliasing smoother? Does the 'smoothing' option make for better visuals or does it just blur the image?

Before anyone asks, I don't want a PAL backward compatible PS3 for 3 reasons:

1) Because their run was much more limited, the prices are much higher than the NTSC counterparts
2) The compatability is achieved via software, not through the physical 'emotion engine' contained in the PS2 and NTSC PS3s
3) I much prefer NTSC for old school gaming due to the 60hz refresh rate, faster frame rate and full screen aspect ratio. Whilst the PS3 is region free for PS3 games, it remains locked for PS2 games/blu rays/DVD movies etc.

Good luck with that. BC PS3s are on their last legs. I personally don't know any that survived, unless they were barely used. You're actually better off finding a 80gb one that used software emulation.

Were they ever available in the US?

If you have a PC its probably strong enough to play PS2 emulated games.
That is the best way to play PS2 games.

Take your P4 controller and hook that up to your PC.
get a Emulator and a "bios" (you can use your own, if you have a old ps2 laying around), and just play the games strait from the CDs.

Afaik this is 100% legal.
(if your useing your own bios (from your ps2) and playing games you have from the ps2)

Depends on game. SoTC, MGS, and FF are noticeable while colorful games not so much.
