Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Digitimes: Nintendo NX will be released in 2016.

The thing is, even if it does release in 2016, unless it absolutely thumps the Xbox or PS4 in terms of raw power, just who in the hell is this thing going to attract? I mean, you would hazard a guess that 2016 and 2017 will be the peak of the PS4/Xbox lifespan in terms of software, so who are they aiming this at? If they are wanting people to shift from Wii U to this then great, there is your first 10 million sales over a period of a year at absolute best but then who else do you target?

PREDICTIONS FOR END OF 2015: (Made Jan 1st 2015)

PS4 - 34M - XB1 - 21m - WII U -12M

Around the Network

That would really be disgusting for WiiU and confirm why there arr no more announcements, to released a console in 2016, that means thé WiiU is dead for tvem since 2014 since an average ambitious game takes at least 2 years of developpement

Predictions for end of 2014 HW sales:

 PS4: 17m   XB1: 10m    WiiU: 10m   Vita: 10m

5 mil home form-factor + 15 mil handheld doesn't sound too unreasonable to me.

Reading on that article posted on the reliability of the source, the conclusion basically sums it up:

"Mundane or logical-sounding Digitimes rumors usually amount to more than eyebrow-raising ones. If it says that Apple’s going to use LED backlighting in MacBooks or add video playback to iPods — well, there’s a decent chance that Apple will. But if it reports that the company will ditch LCDs for OLEDs or equip Macs with touch-screens, don’t assume that its sources know what they’re talking about.

Rumors from parts suppliers are imprecise, even when there’s something there. When Digitimes first wrote about iPhones with gyroscopes and iPads with Retina displays, the main thing it got wrong was the timing — they showed up a year after it expected them to arrive.

Digitimes rarely does anything other than to simply pass along gossip it’s heard. It almost always relays rumors without any analysis or context that might help readers gauge them. At least I only found one instance — when it reported on an alleged OLED iPad — when it expressed any skepticism."

And this rumor sounds little more then click bait gossip from a low level parts supplier. It seems also they are usually a year or more off of a lot of the rumors they are correct on. The last paragraph goes even further to say that it's just better to ignore them until someone else independantly varifies them, since they are wrong so often.

The Source listed again (orginally from Hedra42): http://techland.time.com/2012/05/14/digitimes-apple-rumors/2/

So take this with a grain of salt.

With an overlap of probably close to 100%? At a time where mobile gaming was still not as popular as it is today?

Both devices has a bad 1st year. They could easly ship those numbers with cheap devices and a great lineup. Even if the ship 20M and sell only 18M. That's nothing impossible, unprecedent or surprising.

20 million thefirst year? Are they just going to give them away to get their install base up?

Did you think the first XBox or GBA were "disgusting"? Also why is it ok to have a console with a 6/7/8 year life cycle? Going too long is a-ok, but a year short is the end of the world?

Regarding Apple there likely is much more disinformation with Apple because everyone and their grandma is obsessed with breaking anything new about the latest iPhone or iPad. I wouldn't be surprised if Apple themselves actively distributes false disinformation.

Apple is kind of their own industry beast, I doubt getting a scoop on a Nintendo system is really all that much of a hot ticket to anyone other than like Nintendo fans.

Yep. We knew Wii U was at the finish line since before E3.

Lol, I didn't even read the 20 million part, lol that would be typical Nintendo to have a completely unrealistic first yeat forecast as this. Still don't believe the whole thing though.

3DS first year shipments: 15M

Wii U first year shipmentes: 5M

???

With an overlap of probably close to 100%? At a time where mobile gaming was still not as popular as it is today?

Yes, there is likely a large overlap between 3DS/Wii U owners (certainly not 100%) but if NX has 2 skus (1 handheld & 1 console) there will still likely be a large amount of Nintendo fans buying both.

Also, ur right mobile gaming has gotten bigger in the last few years but ur also ignoring that 3DS/Wii U had horrible post-launch droughts, high price points and some initial confusion of what they were (many thought 3DS was simply a DS redesign with 3D and many people thought Wii U was a new controller add-on for Wii).

So if these devices launch at a more reasonable price point, have first year software support and strong marketing/advertising that doesn't confuse consumers than matching 3DS/Wii U first year sales isn't out of the question.
