Regarding the Swastika I seem to recall something about it being a symbol for peace prior to the Nazi regime using it.

Yep, the actual shape of the cross has been pretty common in various parts of history. There is a building in New York that has the entrance covered with them carved in stone.
When I said Swastika, I was meaning the one people know now, with the red background, then a white circle with a black Swastika on top. However the overall shape again, does show how something entirely innocent can get dragged into meaning something specific.
Even when discussing "Evil Nazis" though, people really do forget that many of them were just ordinary people living their daily lives under the curtain of their reality. For a greater explanation of what I mean like that, see how different the Ukraine crisis is reported to the Russian population vs how it's explains to the EU population.
Russians believe Crimea was liberated. Europeans believe Russia invaded in a hostile manner.
Just like with that, I'm not sure the American civil war is anywhere near as clear cut as the media is wanting me to believe. I'm sure many of pro confederation fighters were not in the slightest bit interested in slavery and had genuine grievance with how "the North" was running them.
As for calling them traitors, does that make the pro independence Scots traitors? Surely all rebellion against a status quo is treason at some point?
