Forums - Gaming Discussion - Microsoft may be interested in buying AMD (Rumour)

This actually makes sense for alot of things microsoft does.

Surface lines (carizzo-l), their phones(custom arm designs), Hololense (HSAIL),...

Make money on each xbox chip sold, along with playstation chip, nintendo one.

Imagine if "microsoft" bought and owned AMD.... next thing you know..... DX13 "only" on AMD (goodbye nvidia).
Or special windows funktions buildt into hardware on the CPU, makeing intel suddenly not look as great a option.

Suddenly everything windows related would run fantastic on AMD, and for some reason... no one knows... everything not AMD would be horribly optimised and have random crashes ect :p

Windows was always open in terms of hardware and there is too much of a market for NVIDIA so MS can't just lock them out. This is not how business works, all want to make money, as much as possible.

Really? My guess is that, if that is true, Sony won't choose AMSD for PS5.

Because of what? Sony and MS do business all the time. If they'll get the best offer from AMD they will choose AMD, regardless of wether MS owns them or not. If MS buys AMD, it'll be a division that is entirely separate from the XBOX division. For example, the PS4 uses some DRM software developped (and licenced) by Microsoft, the XBO uses blu-ray even though Sony is part of the blu-ray consortium and thus makes miney on every blu-ray disc sold.

Really? I would make sure it was always optimised for the Xbox OS, why wouldn't you.

M$ makes money off of every Android phone. Why not every console?

This would be something :D Perhaps AMD owners get good drivers, then?

Nintendo is great with free DLC that's coming way too late after launch :)

Seems like a perfect match.

Well, Sony tries every gen to make people think their Playstation is the most powerful system and they do that quite successfully. With PS4 they made several adjustments to a vanilla AMD design MS obviously didn't know about. If MS buys AMD now they know exactly what Sony is planning and can build an even better system. Or can sell Sony tech they already improved to make use of it alone.

This can not happen as this would guarantee Microsoft being sued by Sony and possibly the EU they would not be allowed to leverage their position in another market in this way. If MS buys AMD which I think would be great. Than this kind of stuff would not happen for sure.

That would make sense, I wouldn't be against this. Sony could still go AMD next gen, even if MS buy it, MS went Blu Ray. Microsoft office is on the Z4 Tablet. They can cooperate you know?

And if Sony go Nvidia next gen then be ready for an overpriced machine -.-

2 Genders: Male and 'Political Agenda'
2 Hairstyles for female characters: Long and 'Political Agenda'
2 Sexualities: Straight and 'Political Agenda'

Man MS simply has too much money.

First, AMD is in considerable financial difficulty and are considering breaking up into two separate companies one for CPU and the other for GPU (basically spinning off ATi)

Second, AMD doesn't make CPU's or GPU's they design them and then foundry's make the chips.

AMD is going to get bought by someone and at least Microsoft will put money into AMD to stop Intel having a monopoly which Microsoft really doesn't want (remember Microsoft bought part of Apple to be safe from antitrust suites in the 90's)
