Forums - Gaming Discussion - Will a fighting game roster ever surpass that of Tobal 2?

Tobal 2 is a Japan-only 3D fighting game for the PS1, released in 1997 by Square. One of the most notbale features of the game is its huge roster of 200 playable characters, a fact that has never been surpassed by another fighting game. What's more impressive is that fact that this was before the era of DLC. So, the question is, will another fighting game ever surpass this roster?

If any game has a shot at it, it would probably be a Dragon Ball game.

200 characters?

Damn, do I dare ask how balanced that game is?

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

Are the character all Dragon Ball z character clones? Toriyama is not the greatest in diversity

However, this game came out at a time when tournament play wasn't really the main focus of console fighting games.

Ever heard of Mugen?

161 were in tenkaichi 3 (counting transformations). I think that had pretty much everyone possible, from DB to GT.

freakin awesome game, still my fav dbz to date.

Nintendo vs Capcom vs Namco vs Sega vs Disney will beat it easily :P

A handheld gamer only (for now).

That would be an interesting concept! There would have to be more than 40 characters per franchise, however.
