Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Reggie Thinks Xenoblade Chronicles X will be a System Seller

He also said the same about splatoon and look how that turned out.

Man, people are rather salty at Reggie. Of course X can be a system seller, there's a big absence of JRPG's on the Wii U, and with the caliber of X, it'll bring a few of those gamers. And with FExSMT also coming, it would make sense to buy a Wii U this december.

Now, when you hear system seller, don't think what Mario Kart 8 did, got it?

There's disturbing abscense of RPGs period on WiiU, though I'm with you that (J)RPGs is one of WiiU's strong points going forward.

They honestly ought to do some kind RPG-focused direct late this year and show off the likes of XCX, SMTxFE as well as indie games like Earthlock. Paper Mario is all but a given on the console. Localizing Dragon Quest X would cause a big stir too. There's lots of other nice franchises like Skies of Arcadia, Ogre Battle, Baten Kaitos that should be within reach. Harvest Moon inbound too.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

Reggie is the nintendo's clown, good job, being paid to make laugh people

And also to be an anger sponge, so that the real people making the bad decisions within NOA never have to answer to the press or the public.

He's not the hero Nintendo deserves, but  the one it needs right now. So we'll hate him. Because he can take it. Because he's not our hero. He's a silent guardian, a watchful protector. A dark knight

Predictions for end of 2014 HW sales:

 PS4: 17m   XB1: 10m    WiiU: 10m   Vita: 10m

I doubt it, far too niche.

like Splatoon?

How is an online shooter niche?

Tell that to people here and gaf

But we have more shooter game than other this gen.

A handheld gamer only (for now).

In Japan it will but I doubt it will move many systems in the rest of the world.

It's not like he will say it won't sell systems even if he thought it wouldn't

I honestly have no Idea how much it will help WiiU but by the time it comes out it feels like they hype will have died and it won't do much for it

    R.I.P Mr Iwata :'(

X sure does look nice and impressive, but it`s not going to sell systems Reg. Sorry to break it to ya.. : / X is not going to be the one game to do it.

Hmmm. I just thought it was really weird of him to say that XCX will appeal to people who have a "competitive console." That was what I found most interesting about this quote as it implies that the Wii U is not competitive (but what is competitive exactly?). This raises the question of why, and I wish the interviewer had pressed him on this. Oh well.

"Especially for an older consumer, and potentially a consumer that owns a competitive console"

With regards to this statement, I actually agree with him. Nintendo isn't going to attract a different audience with more Mario or yarn-based games. The people who consider platformers to be their favorite genre probably already have a Wii U.

But a traditional style RPG? Most RPG fans probably play on another platform.

It's a pretty simple equation. If you want to expand your consumer base then you have to expand your catalog. I'd argue that Playstation is on top globally because it traditionally offers the greatest variety of games. Nintendo likely won't be able to emulate that but broadening your appeal is never a bad idea.

The game certainly has a lot of the earmarks of something that could be huge. It's open world, it's scifi, a focus on exploration, lots of player freedom, it has a lot in common with other big open world games that are very popular.  However, I doubt it will sell a lot of systems. Not due to the game. But rather, due to Nintendo. Seeing as how they gave it a paltry one minute and thirty seconds in their E3 presentation, I have my serious doubts they'll market this with any effort. And the youth of this IP means they must - absolutely must - advertise hard if they want this to sell systems. In other words, they have to learn that to make money they have to spend money.
