What's needed in the Japanese scene is ambition. Ambition in development, confidence in marketing. Some still have it, but a ton just...don't. I'm not saying that they make bad games, that's not the issue. It's that they aren't pushing the envelope, going all in. Love or hate Bethesda Game Studios, you have to respect the fact that every game they make they push to go farther and farther. It feels like many Japanese companies are pinching pennies or hunkering down in bunkers as if to ride out change or just coast along with trends and hope none of it backfires. In some regards, they seem over cautious.
But to quote a favorite film of mine, this is no time for caution.
Here's hoping Sony and other big players can help spark a revitalization.
