Forums - Gaming Discussion - Metacritic stats by Gen 8 platform ** UPDATED **

Hey, long-time lurker, but I had to post in this. Where are you getting the 206 games figure for the WiiU? I checked Metacritic's 'All-time Game Releases by Scores' and they list it at 139. The equivalent places list PS4 at 260 games, and XboxOne at 171.

Using that data you'd come up with:

Metacritic Score.........PS4................WiiU..................Xbox1
>90 .........................(6) 2.3% ..........(4 )2.9% ............(2) 1.2%
>80 ......................(66) 25.4% ........(40) 28.8% ........(35) 20.5%
>70 .....................(165) 63.5% .......(89) 64.0% ........(108) 63.2%
>60 .....................(221) 85.0% ......(115) 82.7% .......(144) 84.2%

The game numbers in parentheses are cumulative, and all percentages are based on the totals given above. I used the Critic scores not User scores, and unscored games (less than seven reviews) were not included. I am a bit confused as to where you got some of your numbers. I only read the OP, so if this has already been addressed in the thread, I apologize.

Please include the handheld CONSOLES.

OP, you have to exclude any fact that favors any console but the Wii U, are you new?

On a serious note, ive been visiting VgChartz for years but lately the Nintendo defence force are at full throttle.

Average percentage-wise, the difference isn't big but it's clear that the PS4 has a far better library based on quantity and quality.

Far more quality? x´D

Forget about indies and remasters and compare, even with all the multiplatforms Ps4 is still far from WiiU on quality.

I'm a PC gamer myself so I wouldn't bother with many of these on the PS4 but there is no denying that it's library, even without indies and remasters, is at least comperable to the WiiU's. Bloodborne, The Witcher 3, Dragon Age: Inquisition and Arkham Knight rival anything the WiiU has to offer.

Great, maybe even make a distribution curve of scores

Check the updated OP, it now breaks it down by score band, the percentage of games that scored between 80-90, 70-80, 60-70, etc. In affect the data gives you the distribution curve.

Thanks for the info.

remasters from good ps3 games probably helped ps4 scores.

I used http://www.metacritic.com/browse/games/release-date/available/ps4/metascore?page=1 for ps4, http://www.metacritic.com/browse/games/release-date/available/xboxone/metascore?page=1 for XB1 and http://www.metacritic.com/browse/games/release-date/available/wii-u/metascore?page=1 for Wii U, sorted by metascore. Obviously used all the pages for each platform, not sure why your links and the ones I used have different number of games in them. I'll look into it more later.

Have read a few comments over this gen where people have said platform X has the best games based on either the top 10 metacritic scores or top 20, thought I'd do an average of the total scores for each Gen 8 platform to see whats what.

Results are:

Wii U: 68.14% from 206 games

XB1: 70.64% from 223 games

PS4: 72.06% from 286 games

Personally I was surprised by both Nintendo and XB1 scores. Nintendo because I thought it would be higher given the calibre of Nintendo and the lower amount of shovelware this gen, and XB1 because its quite close to the PS4 despite known performance deficits especially in 3rd party games. PS4 comes out on top and with the most reviewed games, impressive despite being on the market a full year less than the Wii U.

Overall quite close despite the rhetoric that comes out sometimes, anyone else surprised?

UPDATE

Many people have asked for more breakdown of the numbers to try and whittle out any impact of shovelware or really low scores on the overall average. So I've broken the numbers down into score ranges, as below:

  PS4 Wii U XB1
Range Games Percentage (%) Games Percentage (%) Games Percentage (%)
<=40% 7 2.34% 18 8.74% 4 1.79%

>40 - 50%

10 3.34% 13 6.31% 13 5.80%
>50 - 60% 31 10.37% 22 10.68% 23 10.27%
>60 - 70% 61 20.40% 40 19.42% 47 20.98%
>70 - 80% 115 38.46% 66 32.04% 93 41.52%
>80 - 90% 69 23.08% 43 20.87% 40 17.86%
>90% 6 2.01% 4 1.94% 3 1.34%

From the above, you can see that PS4 retains the lead with number and percentage of games with a metacritic score of >90%, >80%, >70% and >60%.

Metacritic scorePS4Wii UXB1
> 90%2.01%1.94%1.34%
> 80%25.08%22.82%19.20%
> 70%63.55%54.85%60.71%
> 60%83.95%74.27%81.70%

Median

PS4 - 74%

Wii U - 72%

XB1 -  73%

Again, pretty similar numbers but consistently in favour of the PS4. I haven't broken it down by publisher yet, that will take much more time. Has the above information changed anyones thoughts?

EDIT - I have no idea whats going wrong with the headers of the table, obviously each platform has two columns, one for number of games and one for percentage of total games.

Makes me laugh at that guy a month ago who was trying to tell me that it is ok that MS releases Gears/Halo/Forza more often because they are higher rated.

Prediction for console Lifetime sales:

Wii:100-120 million, PS3:80-110 million, 360:70-100 million

[Prediction Made 11/5/2009]

3DS: 65m, PSV: 22m, Wii U: 18-22m, PS4: 80-120m, X1: 35-55m

I gauruntee the PS5 comes out after only 5-6 years after the launch of the PS4.

[Prediction Made 6/18/2014]

Okay, I did some poking around the site and I figured out where the difference comes from. Your numbers do not filter out 'unscored' (less than seven reviews) games. My sources did.

So, I guess removing shovelware (or a chunk of it at least) WiiU has the best percentages until you hit the >60 bracket.

While there is always shovelware risk, no one can't deny Wii U loses some great third party titles like Dragon Age, The Witcher 3, Far Cry 4, Shadows of Mordor.

On the other hand, it is amazing that Nintendo can hold things so close just by themselfes.
