Forums - Nintendo Discussion - NX to replace both Wii-U and 3DS? Rumor based on Iwata speech

Tbh I can see what the OP means, Nintendo in previous gens made statements a long the lines of we'll balance our focus and still support the DS even though the Wii is about to be released etc... The way this statement is worded hints that both 3DS and Wii U will be replaced by NX as the's no reason to mention both handheld and console if only one is being replaced.

The secrecy over the NX also highlights this, before Nintendo would just straight up say it's a handheld or console when they confirmed a platform is on the way but here the silence over what type of hardware it is suggests it may in fact be what's been speculated.

Actually it does seem like confirmation to me. He wouldn't have included 3DS in that line if it had nothing to do with handhelds. He could have just said Wii U and everyone would have understood.

This doesn't confirms anything, if he mentioned only 3DS everyone would know that is NX is handheld, if he mentioned Wii U everyone would know that NX is Wii U. But they still keeping their cards close.

agh Ninty Ninty...

they really messed up the console war with the WiiU, not gonna seek graphics and 3rd parties either, so what remains!? the total handheld domination, so they'll use that in benefit, the ''fusion'' thing makes perfect sense

sounds a horrible idea to me, unless they have something really cool in their mind :/

don't mind my username, that was more than 10 years ago, I'm a different person now, amazing how people change ^_^

To be honest I could see a unified approach actually getting *more* third party support than the "lets make a Nintendo PS4 and a VitaDS and support them with seperate libraries" (which is what most Nintendo fans here expect).

There's no real incentive for third parties to support a "me too" Nintendo console. Between the XBox and Playstation and even the PC, there's more than enough for a third party to feel like they're covering their bases. Making a port for a Nintendo system so people can play the same game in the same way is redundant.

But if you can share games on the go and at home ... well now that gets some third parties interested, because that's something the PS4/XB1/PC can't really do.

If I'm Square-Enix I want a portable + home version of Kingdom Hearts 3. There's a logical and clear incentive to do so, because the NX is different. Same goes for things like FIFA and Madden ... if they can make a portable version of the console games, even if they have to scale it down, then I think that has appeal to EA.

The question is how much horsepower can Nintendo get into the machine and how far up and down can they scale the graphics, but mobile chips are getting much, much more powerful every year.

Yep Nintendo is scared of leaking their "gimmick" but everyone knows it ll be game cartridges that can run on both a home console and a mobile handheld version.

I'm more thinking the fact that it will release around 2-3 years prior to the next PS/Xbox. Plenty of time for the competition to implement whatever Nintendo is doing with their next systems.

Think the OP has been using his Jumping To Conclusions Mat too much. Tom is that you?

I don't think this is confirmation of much to be honest

Although 3DS and Wii U are different devices, they draw from the same resources, Nintendo's 1st party teams. Hence why the 3DS great years were Wii U's worst and vice versa. Essentially if Nintendo is preparing for NX software, it will be at the expense of both 3DS and Wii U.

Price will be the deciding factor. They can't combine both easily without reaching affordable price and power that are close to Current gen consoles because by the time NX launches PS4/XB1 will be $299 and lower with deals. Even if they match current gen consoles hardware power but next PS5/XB successor in 2018/19 can top NX again repeating Wii U for 3rd party content.

GAMING is not about spending hours to pass/waste our time just for fun,

its a Feeling/Experience about a VIRTUAL WORLD we can never be in real, and realizing some of our dreams (also creating new ones).

So, Feel Emotions, Experience Adventure/Action, Challenge Game, Solve puzzles and Have fun.

PlayStation is about all-round "New experiences" using new IP's to provide great diversity for everyone.

Xbox is always about Online and Shooting.

Nintendo is always about Fun games and milking IP's.

I changed your title, Iwata didnt really confirm anything here.
