Forums - Nintendo Discussion - NX to replace both Wii-U and 3DS? Rumor based on Iwata speech

Called it.

I'd actually be on board with this.

I think this is what it is too.

Replacement for both.

Though I'm starting to wonder if NX is a singular device rather than multiple devices. Perhaps Nintendo decided that making a handheld that docks to the TV in some way was the best route to go?

Iwata mentioned multiple form factors or perhaps only needing one.

Now this might not seem like interesting news at first, weren't it that he just mentioned the 3DS and Wii-U platform together as being replaced. And not just once, but twice! This means that NX is likely to replace both 3DS and Wii-U, pretty much confirming rumors about a ''fusion'' platform. What kind of hardware we can expect exactly remains to be seen, but unifying both platforms and their potential install bases is a interesting prospect to say the least.

NX is a PLATFORM. So more like an Operation System which can run on DIFFERENT HARDWARE.

While it could be possible to make a (New) 3DS successor which can be used on a TV (maybe even stream to it like Apple TV etc.) - that doesn't make much sense as more powerful GPUs simply need more cooling then a plastic handheld case without any fan can provide.

Also of concern is pricing: the better the performance/watt ratio is - the higher the components prices are. Nintendo is known to use low budget components and get the most out of it.

And for some years to come having two different dedicated machines are simply the most efficient way to deliver performance/money.

NX main target is to drop development costs. This is even more important as when NX is going to be Linux with some Android libraries - Nintendo can use the SAME CODE BASE to deliver console, handheld AND mobile games.

It is even possible TO MAKE THE WII U AN NX CONSOLE by updating their OS. There is enough Flash in them even in the basic Wii Us to make this possible...

The NX is new hardware, and will start from 0."

"he just mentioned the 3DS and Wii-U platform together as being replaced."

Nope. Don't see it.

Moving on...

You're seeing what you want to see there. I see no inference of any sort of 'fusion platform' in those words...at all.

You guys might want to hold off on the wild speculation and confirmation bias until you can get some hard info, or at least credible rumours.

Got my fingers crossed: all their software going into one platform.

He doesn't say that at all. :/
He probably mentioned 3DS and Wii U together, because he doesn't want to reveal what exactly NX is, either a handheld or a console. So I don't think this confirms anything... Also NX is supposed to be a third system next to their consoles and handhelds, so it still makes a lot of sense.

“We will continue making 3DS and Wii software while preparing for the NX" - Doesn't this sound like that they will still release games for the Wii U and the 3DS BEFORE the NX comes out. When it comes out they will probably stop or lessen the supporting of those 2.

And there was the interview on the developer of Metroid about how if they make a new metroid game now it will take 3years, and how they would rather make it for the NX, since it would be released by then. So doesn't that sound like this NX would be a console? Or at least a device that will have your Nintendo franchises, with their next game in the series.

Pocky Lover Boy!

Sounds good but i doubt it'll be much more powerful than the WiiU

I don't think this is confirmation of much to be honest

Although 3DS and Wii U are different devices, they draw from the same resources, Nintendo's 1st party teams. Hence why the 3DS great years were Wii U's worst and vice versa. Essentially if Nintendo is preparing for NX software, it will be at the expense of both 3DS and Wii U.
