There is little to no difference between the Tales character design you linked and the 3 "good" examples you have.

Comparing Atelier is completely disingenious and an all around bad comparison. Find some bishoujo SNES or PS1 games and make the comparison.

Its a great comparison, shows the quality in jrpgs artstyle dropped IMO , cause you know i posted MY opinion , i dont expect people to agree with me or i care about it , i find the artstyle of my last 2 examples completely garbage , some people find Nomura style is garbage and full of belts , i like it. Different opinions and diferent tastes.

You can like the old stuff more and that's great (still think Zesty pic looks no different than a character from Wild Arms or Xenogears, but I digress), but it's a bad comparison because it's incredibly cherry picked to confirm your argument. This comparison is just as valid as yours:

Versus:

Just because we see a lot more games from Japan via more localizations and the internet doesn't mean that very similar games didn't exist in past generations.

Also, I wanted another reason to post more Nier.

Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."

In my case, I just usually hate the art style for most J-RPGs that come out nowadays.

No offense to the people that like this sort of style but I just can't stand the moe/chibi style that most J-RPGs seem to have nowadays. Most of my favorite J-RPGs from the 90's have a distinct style that is often more realistic and I generally prefer that. I could never get into Kingdom Hearts so I don't give a damn about the new one but on the other hand I do care about XV because I like the style they are going for.

That FFXV pic looks great, but my guess is that it's something that lot of WRPG fans would be way more interested in if it's not for (from left to right) 1,3,4, and it was more 2 and 5:

considering WRPG fans just came out of something like this:

I think many have touched on the reasons. The anime art style, the jpop culture, the music, stories, dialogue, characters, gameplay (mostly turn-based) etc.

I'd imagine hours of trudging (aka grinding) through cliché'd and overdone teenage angst stories would be enough to put almost anyone off, but then you have the equally fitting; moe, gooey-eyed characters plastered over the game covers for most modern JRPGs.

The ff 15 look is what i want from jrpgs , yes they are 5 dudes and it needed more females just to make it more balanced but its a great design, towns look fucking awsome, enemies too, then we have ff 7 remake that is on the right path and kingdom hearths artstyle is awsome too.

The witcher 3 artstyle is amazing too in character design. Its perfect for the game it is. Wrpgs  are nailing it, i love artstyle in mass effect, dragon age, witcher, deus ex, horizon. Its great

Not necessarily saying it needs more female characters (if the game is not about that, it's just not), I'm saying that, apart for personal preferences, IMO, for average mainstream western gamer char design like this is cool:

and char design like this is not so cool:

I thnk that JPOP/Emo really needs to go away from JRPGs if Japanese publishers expect western mainstream to pay more attention - again, without going into personal preferences and looking it strictly from "We want to sell more JRPGs in west" view, considering western audience have zero problems with something like this:

I have personally never given turn based rpg's a chance until this week. Sure I've play snippets of them here and there but you would never guess what game would just all the sudden make me start to enjoy them. Final fantasy 1 on my ps1. I really like it even though it's pretty repetitive and primitive but I can't quit playing. It's the origins collection I'm playing right now. I'm about to but anthology off eBay then move to VIII skipping VII for ps4. I own many final fantasy games already. Now they will finally get the chance.

p.s. I'm a south west westerner.

^ Amazon has the anthology for cheap, and brand new! ;)

I got into Final Fantasy, because of Crystal Chronicles on the Gamecube. I thought the FF games looked awesome, always wanted to try them, but I'm always been more of a Nintendo guy. But now that I'm able to afford more than one console, I have some FF games in my backlog.

PS: Crystal Chronicles as a whole is DOPE.

Thanks alot! I might keep it sealed or get two.

I find it a little too simplifying to chalk the "too much anime" in a lot of JRPGs up to japanese culture, sure anime is definitely part of japanese culture but I'd say its current direction (a lot of cutesy characters, moe, fanservice etc.) is more thanks to an increased focus on very niche consumer groups that actually are willing to buy a lot of merch for those shows. The same focusing can be seen with these JRPGs, cause a lot of them aim at pretty similar groups. Considering that most of the really big series in Japan have that stuff toned down and that the games that really focus on that stuff are generally not exactly lighting the charts on fire in Japan either, I'd say that this stuff even over there is not exactly considered "normal".

While japanese RPGs will probably never be equally as successful as WRPGs in the west (outside of FF and KH) they still very much have the possibility to be more successful than they are today if they are willing to move away from their current patterns in terms of character, story and game design, Ni No Kuni for example is a game I'd say that had more than acceptable success in the west, because it didn't rely on those cliches (and it was a really good game and had Ghiblis name attached to it, that definitely helped). But like I said before, for that to happen studios would need more security and funds to be able to take more risks.

True but not everyone does it, even in anime there are shows that aren't moe driven. However, the entire genre is being judged solely because of its anime style or design and people automatically thinks it must be moe or niche, which is the problem.

Its the exact same reasoning I hear from those who do not play western games because they are all shooters or macho testosterone driven. Its a failed reasoning.

We end up judging the book by its cover before actually doing research on it let alone play it.
