Forums - Nintendo Discussion - It's time - Reggie needs to quit, Now!

I like Reggie. He has embraced fun more than any other company head out there. The Nintendo World Championship is evidence of that. Also, they seem to pay attention to absolutely everything Nintendo fans are saying. He should just be more open to acting on them outside jokes is all. They are aware enough of the fandom wanting Mother 3 to make a (hilarious) joke about it, but maybe actually releasing it at the end of that Digital Event would have been better.

He said that the current state of virtual reality is not fun or social.  Do you honestly believe that this statement will impact the relationship between Nintendo and virtual reality developers?  He even mentioned that Nintendo had been testing virtual reality integration.  I read his statement as, "if Nintendo is going to implement virtual reality, it's not going to be anything like what you see today."  The truth, though, is that we're both extrapolating context from a few, possibly misconstrued, words.

I still don't see how he was belittling fans of other consoles, though.

How can you state the current state of vr is not fun and have not even played the latest round of vr games/demoes?!

"hey developers, I haven't played your games but they are not fun and they are not social"

Now is a developer who works hard, sweats on creating a fun VR game gonna take a comment like that lightly. It's insulting.

Especially add the fact that virtually every news outlet had positive reactions for the VR shown at this e3. But Reggie always has negative stuff to say about other companies tech, he can't just say "I'm interested to see where it goes, currently I don't feel the applications are at a level of consumption for the gaming market, so we are therefore not pursuing VR at this moment"

That's an open-minded, non arrogant and embracing way to talk about their stance on VR without offending anyone's hard work.

I would hope that developers are not so impulsive that they dismiss a company or console based on one remark during a casual interview.

We're making a lot of assumptions based on about twenty words and then based on those assumptions we're claiming that Reggie needs to leave.  That's a massive leap.  If Reggie truly hates competition and virtual reality, then I agree with you... but I don't think there's enough evidence in four quotes to justify your assumptions.

It's amazing how crappy Nintendos PR has been as of late. I was watching an interview with Shu yesterday and he managed to do a great job of selling his company and their products and didn't have to attack anyone or anything else at all. In fact, Shu has always been perfectly willing to complement his competitors when he thinks they've done something right.

Reggie, and Nintendo as a whole it seems, need to stop being whiny babies.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

He is a joke.

I don't think we should be too quick to judge Reggie or Nintendo. I think Nintendo has never been quick to change because for such a long time they have carved out areas of the game market for themselves where they are unrivalled (in the 80's-90's that was the home console world and in the 2000's that was the handheld world and the Wii). Nintendo never has followed the ebs and flows of the industry since they have always been a company that makes their own path.

What's more, never under-estimate Nintendo's strategy: NES, Game Boy, Pokemon, DS, Wii... Nintendo has cultivated cultural phenomenons on more than one occasion in the last 30 years. According to many in the media, Nintendo is so behind the times and out-of-touch that it's a wonder that they haven't gone out of business decades ago. Yet, somehow, Nintendo has managed to lead the gaming industry for most of this time. More recently they have taken a disasterously undesirable console like the Wii U and made it somewhat profitable through incredibly popular titles like MK8 and Splatoon and the hugely successful Amiibo brand. Sony or Microsoft's presence in the gaming industry would be history if they had released hardware as unpopular as the Wii U.  This is just how talented Nintendo is to be able to carry a weight like the Wii U around its neck.

Here's an important fact: Nintendo is not a technology company, they are a unconventional game creator that likes to exist in it's own experimental sphere and producing hardware is the avenue that allows them to do this. I'm not saying that Nintendo doesn't need to keep up with the times to some degree, but they don't have to be leaders in technology like Sony and Microsoft do.

Hell, who would know a bad conference could start so much drama? Even with an actually good E3.

I mean, everything went doom and gloom in just an hour, because they presented a Metroid Spin off. Now the internet thinks NX is coming in Dec/2015, Iwata/Reggie need to die and Metroid Federation needs to be burned to calm down the meltdown god.

Well to me it seemed I quoted four points which were words that came out of Reggie's mouth, one where he insulted Nintendo fans (Iwata didn't apologise) one where he insulted developers (your VR content isn't fun even though I didn't play it recently) insulted competition needlessly (they have content but no exclusives) and falsely shared info (we don't announce games 5/6 years in advance like others)

The only other thing I've mentioned is Nintendos ad policy which sorry, I think Reggie should have a fucking say in.

Added into Nintendos dwindling reputation due to sales etc. Which I never blamed reggie for, it doesn't spell a good sentence for the leadership at Nintendo, one of whom is Reggie who is the focus of this thread.

You should read over what you have written here again

Hmm, so far I`m not really seeing many reasons as to why Reggie should step down. So far, it seems to be be due to some of the quotes he has been saying since E3 happened. Sure, Reggie has said and done some questionable things, but I don`t really see any reason for him to go, and the reasons to why he should don`t seem strong points, with some of them having some truth to them or questioning things happening in the industry. The comment about announcing games way ahead of time has some truth, specifically SE`s FF15, which was V13 at first, and The Last Guardian, which I don`t recall how far back it was first revealed. For all we know, there could be more that have done that, but I`m not sure. So it is something true that he called out. Ninten overall seems to handle announcing and releasing their games in a timely manner, for the most part.

Also, with the VR thing, I think he does make points about it, such as the device not being very social friendly. From the look of the design and watching others play it, it does appear that way. I know there are games that have some social aspects to it, but it does appear to look like something strictly a single player experience. So I think it`s good he shares possible issues with VR. Perhaps that way it can help shape VR to be even better later on.

So yeah, Reggie may have said some things that people don`t like, but not all of it is purely wrong, or bad. For all we know, he could have had a hand in some of the better aspects of Nintendo`s actions, such as Nintendo World Championships, or the Splatoon live event. Who knows. But I think it`s unfair to rate him based on his quotes from E3 alone. We`d have to see the whole picture first before making claims like that.

I agree he should go, before anyone in Japan.

Why? Because Japanese developers have supported the Wii U.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Ah, this Thread is going to be priceless <(^.^<)

Reginald Fils-Aime aka Reggie or the Reggienator. Nintendo of Americas most beloved Mascot gets verbal butchered after the messed up Digital Event. It's indeed funny and kinda surreal how things went. I mean, about a few hours before the Digital Event, he was still Everybodies Darling.

Reggie is, as I told before, a man who is able to win the Audience. This is quite impressive and it's not a bad attitude. On the other Hand, he never was a businessman. It's quite the opposite. He made some cruel decisions when it comes to Marketing and Releases. Reggie is the "We are doing, what is best for business" guy. This also isn't a bad Philosophy. But he refused to release the Fatal Frame 2 Remake for the Wii in the US. The sames goes for the small Version of the New 3DS (they will release it anyway in the US later). But the same happened to Xenoblade Chronicles, The Last Story and Pandoras Tower. He told you, these Wii Games weren't released because of Operation Rainfal which was acknowledged but had zero impact on the Release. I think, this was the quote where he was talking BS. And it seems like the new Fatal Frame will be an eShop only Release in the US. And what will happen do Devil's Third?

But I guess, who ever will be in Charge of Nintendo of America, he will do the same. This Company runs his own Family Friendly values for almost 30 years now.

For me as an European Gamer, we're often getting overlooked. But Nintendo of Europe is quite a chilled Company. I think you never heard of the President of Nintendo of Europe? It's Satoru Shibata. Barely known, even here in Europe. He is handling the Directs, too.
