Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Did Kickstarter save the Wii U?

Many indie developers have gone on record, more or less echoing the same sentiment, that outside of Steam/PC, that the eShop (both 3DS and Wii U) are "the most viable platform for indie games". And that certainly must be true, considering that 3DS eShop has a shit-ton of great indie titles, and a consistent flow. And even Wii U continues to have more and more games announced as coming to it's eShop, seemingly every month, and it's been that way for a couple of years now.

As a Wii U owner, I will say, that even though there are certainly still some retail titles I'm still looking forward to (Yoshi, Zelda, whatever Retro's making, etc.), the eShop has been a lifesaver, and most of the games that I look forward to in general these days, are indie developed titles, coming either to Wii U eShop or Steam. It's nice, for instance, to hear that Axiom Verge will "probably" come to Wii U in 2016, as I do want to play that game, and don't know when, if ever, I will get around to buying a PS4.

I would say in general, that I am and have been incredibly disheartened and disappointed, even disgusted to be honest, in the direction the gaming industry has gone. Companies that I used to adore, all of whom used to be consistent in releasing strong, quality games many many years ago, are either now defunct, or might as well be, and that list is quite long: Capcom, Sega, Konami, Namco, Square/Enix, Tecmo, Hudson Soft, Midway, THQ, Rare, Atari, SNK (for the most part, Playmore does still surprise every once in awhile, but they don't do much anymore), Jaleco, etc. etc. Nintendo I know I can still count on to provide me with at least a handful of games every generation that I will likely want to play, and will enjoy. But outside of that, most of the "old guard" have faded away or changed irrevocably. And many of the "new guard", many of the western studios that have risen to prominence in the last 15+ years, make games that I just cannot get into that much.

There are still a few non-indie studios, like Good-Feel, Vanillaware, Team Ico, Platinum Games, etc. that do make awesome games. But really, indie titles have been growing, and the reason so many of them are so good, is because they are moving away from the bloated, "AAA" budget style games that are honestly killing the industry, and stripping shit down, getting back to what made video games FUN in the first place. And I'm glad to see many icons of the industry, moving on from the old companies who no longer resemble what they once were, and doing their own thing, like Igarashi, Inafune, Sakaguchi, Suzuki, the former Rare chaps making Yooka-Laylee, etc.

I'm not pleased it went to PS4 though. People funded it based on it being a wiiu exclusive. It should have stayed an exclusive.

actually i'm pretty sure one of the stretch goals was multiplatform release.

Well, I'll say that I am definitely happy that because of Kickstarter, the Wii U will be getting Mighty No. 9, Yooka Laylee, and Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night.

Honestly many indie games have replaced third party on the Wii u. Shovelknight totally is better than anything Ea, Ubisoft, or Activision could have offered.

For me, this is absolutely true. My personal reasons for feeling so, are that MOST indie developed games, seem to harken back to what video games used to be (and arguably should be) all about: IE gameplay and fun game design are paramount. Many of them are "retro styled", or just 2D, and that also suits me just fine, as I personally LOVE sprite based gaming. 3D games can be awesome too, but I'll always prefer 2D. So I get most of what I want out of gaming from many of these indie studios now, and that's just fine by me.

adding the games from kickstarter for the Wii U. it really helped in a sense but not in a big way.
