The '' I only buy Nintendo consoles for Nintendo games'' mentality is what is hurting Nintendo in the long run

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

Likewise, it cannot be ignored that under his tenure, Nintendo made its bestselling home console, its bestselling handheld and posted the biggest profits in company history. So maybe it would be for the best to listen to him and think about what Nintendo is planning for the future. Or you can choose to be stuck in the present and pretend that Nintendo will continue to be the same from here on out.

Oh he did a fantastic job 2006-2010, I agree. But that was a long time ago, how much longer do we give him the benefit of the doubt?

I think that the NX generation is make or break for Iwata.  If it fails to improve upon the current generation there will need to be new leadership.  Unless of coarse mobile games and quality of life become big money makers. Looks at Apple for example. Apple used to be a home computer company and while their home computers are doing well it is a secondary market to their smartphone market which is where they are making large sums of money.

Honestly I don't have the energy or time right now to dissect a post this long, but suffice it to say, the sales speak for themselves, they are not meeting gamer's expectations, nor indeed their fans given the overwhelmingly negative response to this E3, including a 20,000 strong and growing petition to cancel one of their announced games.

That's fine, lol, after today I'll disappear for a while anyway. :P

But, if anything, the reaction to MP:FF and that petition speaks worse of the fans, that's just lunacy incarnate right there. Game may be hot shit, fine, don't buy it. But to actively ask for its cancellation and the work of a talented studio like NLGs? For a project that Tanabe wanted to make for Metroid (Prime universe, specifically) for a long time? Fuck off. I absolutely adore the Prime games, and I didn't even bat an eye at the announcement aside from "That's it? Well whatever."

Also, E3's over whelming negative response was after an overwhelmingly positive response of pleasing fans... followed by a lot of better wind from the actual show floor. The whole E3 was a debacle of epic proportions no doubt but we're acting as if it is the only thing that transpired and, at that point, honestly its a case of seeing what you want to see and the discussion draws to a close.

I mean, this whole E3 has been a debacle. Look at where Shenmue 3 has ended up, look at us frothing at the mouth over a project that was effectively vapourware for nine years, look at use being hyped over a game that won't see the light of day until 2029. About the only good thing that came out of E3 was Bethesda and Horizon: Zero Dawn, lol.

That wasn't necessary with the Wii. Nintendo accomplished that with the Wii. Nintendo tried to appeal to the tablet market with the WiiU but didn't work out.

But that was before smartphones and tablets took over. The opportunity for a casual dedicated gaming machine is now gone.  I hope i'm wrong because i'm a big nintendo fan but I just believe that it is gone. Nintendo's best bet is in creating something is a must own extra system for core gamers.

Oh, I completely get you. I can't rule out completely the possibility that someone can make something in a gaming platform that can attract people who would otherwise not care for videogames though. Nintendo proved that it can be done, whether it can be repeated or not is yet to be seen.

Definitely, appealing to casuals kind of takes away attention from the core fans, that is understandable.

The problem is that apparently Nintendo has hardcore fans as dedicated to gaming as any Micro and Sony hardcore fans, but they appear to be less in numbers and it would seem that, for Nintendo to ever achieve Wii numbers again, they would need to appeal to that fleeting market that, as you point out, may or may never return and could be lost forever, maybe. Of course, unless Nintendo manages to switch the tables drastically somehow and they find a way to seduce people who opt for Xbox and PlayStation over them.

Nintendo is selling their IPs to Microsoft and this is true because:

I think Nintendo needs to take that and run with it. Hopefully with NX the console and handheld while share the same games library and nintendo needs to continue to create new game studios and expand it's capacity to make games. And they need to create a variety of games. First Person Shooters, RPGs, and their classic game franchises.  They just need really to get EA on board to provide sports.

Well if it hasn't got the horsepower, it won't get multi plat stuff. Without that it'll never have the well rounded software lineup to have ttrue appeal beyond the Nintendo gamer niche.

RIP Dad 25/11/51 - 13/12/13. You will be missed but never forgotten.

Oh I agree with you that calling for the cancellation of the game is flat-out irrational and pointless, I just think it speaks volumes as to how pissed off a lot of people are.

Honestly, I don't want to be this grumpy, depressing arsehole that I am now, but I just can't summon up the energy to be optimistic about Nintendo any more, they just keeping letting me down.

You know, I keep reading about this "fusion" thing, about handheld and console sharing the same games but, wasn't that what people were complaining about the Vita? That it only had games you could play in the PS3 already?

Fair enough, lol, I actually feel the opposite since the Wii was really bad for me as a software console with Prime 3 and a few other choice titles being the only thing on the console. Brawl was a fucking kick in the nuts. And I am not ashamed to say that I soft-modded my Wii after the first year or so, and from then on gamed almost entirely on the 360 and the DS.

WiiU has actually given me a metric ton of software to enjoy that has actually been on the vein of "fans wanted this" for the most part, and so I am, conversely, now more optimistic. Its the doomed console with some of the best games I've ever owned, and fuck if the little guy doesn't evoke pity. :P

That said, if you want to be optimistic, go watch the NWC and then pretend E3 didn't happen. :P

People understand the whole Fusion idea wrong, lmao. I don't get why anyone would want something like that. What Iwata clearly pointed out to was a console and a handheld that shared similar development environments, nothing more, nothing less. That'd make things easier for Nintendo and Indie developers because they wouldn't have to focus on 2 completely different architectures but rather 1 unified one. The Console would still be much more powerful and each would have unique games.
