I went to Nintendo Access @ Best Buy to try Super Mario Maker!
Saturday, I went to a local Best Buy store holding a Nintendo Access event, primarily focused on demoing Super Mario Maker.
Some observations:
-Very large (7-8 ft) display right as you walk in the door
-3 non-Best Buy employees manning the area around the WiiU demo area. (1 from Nintendo, 2 contracting brand ambassadors)
-I got the pin. The pin is actually really nice.
-There was a notice posted that Nintendo would be taking photos and writing down they descriptions of the event
-You had to wait in line about 10-15 minutes to get a chance to demo Super Mario Maker. It wasn't so bad, because just watching this game is really fun!
-There were 40 full levels available to play in the demo. Yes, you read that right.
-Level creation wasn't demoed unfortunately.
-There were a lot large families that came over, regardless of whether they knew about this event at Best Buy before they came in. People young and old really liked the gameplay. There were also people in their 20s and 30s who came over too.
-Lots of other Ninty marketing materials primarily focused on new 3DS, Puzzles & Dragons Z, Smash, and MK8. This included some posters and stickers!
-This was the most people I have ever seen around a WiiU retail display, including the holiday period (and I've been to Best Buy on Black Friday). There were between 12-20 people there at one time.
-Several of the people trying out the game had never really played the WiiU before
-A few people did travel up to an hour to attend the event
-The Splatoon WiiU bundle was sold out. Lots of copies of the game though
-I found a GC adapter out in the wild! $20 and it was mine.
-Super Mario Maker is totally DOPE. Just got upgraded to 'must-buy' status for me.
-I was told about the preorder bonuses (but I knew about them already anyway)
Overall, this is the most aggressive marketing I've seen in a local store for any WiiU game. And based on the hands-on reactions, Super Mario Makier is going to be huge. Sure-fire system seller. If they market the game this hard at release and through the holiday, this could be the fastest and best-selling WiiU game yet.
I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016
