Forums - Gaming Discussion - Tomb Raider vs Street Fighter Double Standards

Personally, I really don't care about Tomb Raider being a timed exclusive or that Street Fighter is an exclusive. A few gamers from both camps are being silly over it but what can you do about them? It will keep happening in the future.

It's clear though that you're a not the pc gamer with no bias as you make yourself out to be.

Sony didnt just pay to help fund the game. They gave Capcom extra money to keep it off Xbox.

Sony and MS have funded games that eventually went multiplat. But keeping it exclusive is another story.

Hmm the way I see it is Sony has a big Japanese market to cater too so finding snd securing capcom mustve been on the list. Microsoft has a big American market and Phil also statrd it was his awnser to Uncharted which were both due for Dec 15. Microsoft always timed exclusived everything besides Titanfall. Gta, Cod on the 360 the ps4 is following that trend and i wholeheartedly believe they paid most of the development gor SFV and the want to capitalize on the Xbox, for SFV is big on both markets i mean look at Sega there moving to mobile

There's always double standards because the PS4 is in the lead. Anytime the Xbox One does something of course there will be more salty fanboys on the Playstation side because the PS4 has more market share and is selling better.

I'm sure if it was the other way around and the Xbox One was in the lead it would be the same thing.

If you can't see the difference, you have not read all the facts.

SF5 wasn't announced for Xbox 1 then bought out by Sony. Tomb raider was announced and happening on all platforms, until MS paid up.

Of course SF5 would have happened eventually, without Sony money, but they had no plans to do one soon. Also they will lose money by letting it be on PC, yet it will be out on PC. Is Tomb Raider on PC? Even just Windows 10 exclusive? No.

I won't be buying either game, mainly out of interest.

To make clear: I hate moneyhatting, exclusive and timed exclusive features/dlc altogether. E.G. Disappointed that dlc will be late for cod now on xbox, even though it doesn't affect me.

I love 1st and 2nd party exclusive full games.

Um ok? Like I said, Square Enix sought a partner to get (even more) profits. It doesn't matter what kind of financial situation they were in. They wanted money. Whoever chipped in would have gotten the game earlier. I know the SFV story, but I'm tired of the jabs at MS (not necessarily from you) claiming this was just another "moneyhat". Evidently it wasn't.

Wait? How was it not? It's just a regular timed exclusivity deal isn't it? Which let me be clear isn't the issue people had with the TR deal. Timed deals really aren't new or uncommon. The two main issues people had with it were that a significant majority of TR fans don't own an Xbox (60% of people who bought the last TR on console bought it on a PS) and just how badly they handled the announcement.

But back on topic. As I said earlier, the SFV deal and the TR deal are very different. So the OPs assertion that anyone who was upset about TR but not SFV is a hypocrite is just plain silly.

Because as I pointed out, Square Enix sought a partner for the game to make (extra) profits. Whether or not they really needed a partner is up for debate, but that's on them not MS. Whoever partnered would have gotten the game early. The bad PR thing I agree with.

The one problem that I have with the "most TR fans are on PS" arguement is that most Japanese games and older games have fanbases on PlayStaton and/or Nintendo. Should MS just not bother and never take a chance with those games? How will they build a fanbase for those titles? Yes the PS4 is outselling the XB1 but still. Should they never touch those games?

When you money hat away a game from Playstation the majority of gamers will miss out and be pissed, but when Sony does it most people don't care since most people own a ps4.

They came right out and said what Street Fighter was. Microsoft now announces Tomb Raider as "X1 exclusive....Holiday 2015"...instead of their usual "First on Xbox" so they are still trying to hide what it is. Phil ain't foolin no one with that pretend image he is trying to portray.

Thanks jlmurph!

It's all business, plain and simple. This misconception that Sony, Microsoft, Square Enix, Capcom, or any other video game company really cares about anything but making money is just downright silly. Microsoft needed a franchise to compete with Uncharted this fall (before it got delayed). Square Enix was offered money for timed exclusivity which substantially reduces their risk. It's a win-win situation for the companies.

Sony needed an exclusive fighting game to compete with Killer Instinct on the Xbox One. So they paid Capcom to develop Street Fighter V on the PS4. Again, win-win situation for both companies.

I really don't think Killer Instinct was worrying sony.  It's just one fighting game, afterall.

And Uncharted is just one action-adventure game (albeit a big one). They are both bullet points for each manufacturer to differentiate very similar products.

With the amount of middle tier and big budget games dwindling this generation, having a big name brand such as Street Fighter is a very appealing propsition. It may not have been a huge concern for Sony, but it filled a gap in their porfolio.

Halo/Killzone, Forza/Gran Turismo, Killer Instinct/Street Fighter V, Tomb Raider/Uncharted.
