Forums - Sales Discussion - Final Fantasy and Playstation/Xbox

Last gen was the 1st time we saw multiplatform launches for Square's flagship franchise.

FF XIII- 5.3 mil on PS3, 2.1 mil on XB360 - this is despite MS have a fairly large lead at the time in marketshare. Even in NA PS3 version sold 500k more than 360 version and at the time the 360 had close to a 2-1 advantage in marketshare.

FF XIII-2- 2.6 mil PS3, .7 mil X360. Now at more than a 3-1 advantage. (X360 had decent markshare lead)

FF XIII: LR- 1.01 mil PS3, .23 mil X360, Now at just over a 4-1 advantage. (Marketshare was about equal at this point)

FF T-0: According to outdated software numbers from VGC, it is greater than a 5-1 advantage for PS4. But based on post from people at GAF that number may be closer to 10-1.   This is important because the biggest selling point for the game was the FF XV demo.

Based on this it is very reasonable to project a 4-1 to 5-1 advantage for FF XV, this makes it reasonable if Sony wanted to, to get some sort of exclusivity. Timed or content. I doubt they would go for full out exclusive because if they get timed or Marketing/content the XB1 version will be DOA regardless.

Sony may not even need to put up money for exclusivitity of less western friendly games. For instance, according to GAF again, the XB1 version of T-0 failed to even sellthrough the minimum pre-order requirement. Most of this post was specific in referrence to Square and FF, but this part I think will carry true for most eastern friendly games.

This game is going to boost PS4 sales anyway, so unless MS had tried to get it exclusively, Sony wouldn't have paid any money for it, specially knowing JRPGs sell way better on PS consoles than XBox ones.

If this title was a les known game, SE would have tried to make it exclusive. But FFVII is one of the most popular games of all time, it will sell more than a million on every platform it's on based on name alone.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Why would Sony want to waste their money?

It's only worth getting exclusive deals with games if it will actually sell the console. No matter how little it may cost it would still be a waste since whether it is exclusive or not it will still boost the PS4 by about the same amount.

FF VII would have been viewed as a PS game, would have sold better on PS4 no matter what, but they still made sure to get it "1st on Playstation".

Final Fantasy is a huge title. It would send a message to consumers regardless if they planned on getting it or not. That said FF XV would be to expensive to buy outright exclusivity.

Obviously Sony sees value in getting games exclusive regardless on whether or not the game would have been heavily asscociated with their console.

Again, so why get FF VII remake "1st on Playstation"

By using your logic they should have just let it come out on both because it would help them more anyways.

Things like this are why Sony is going to get a lot of japanese exclusives without even really asking for them, Nier 2 for example is probably not exclusive because Sony wanted it.

Who said Sony wasted any money on the FF VII Remake deal? FF VII has always been only on PlayStation for consoles, and it was published by Sony in the west.

Still any Final Fantasy fan knows that to play those games the PlayStation is the way to go. It's (and will be) getting all FF titles, also playing better. Sure SE doesn't want to enrage its Japanese fans.

Ya, I agree. The 2nd tier Japanese stuff will just come out for the PS4 only. Sony wont even have to bargain for it. Its the top tier stuff they will have to make it worth the Dev/Pub's while to give them timed or full exclusive.

I am going to assume Sony made some sort of financial deal to lock it in. Probably just paying for marketing. But it could have been more.

Can you imagine how much that would cost MS?

If Final fantasy sells like 5 - 10 times as much on about equal market share, then when the PS4 is at near double the Xbox one user base.... that would mean for every sell of a game on Xbox they are loseing 10 - 20 times as many copies sold on a PS4.

The price to buy such a "exclusive" would be enormous.

It would start some ugly sh*t storms of bad PR as well.... there would be alot of angry fans.
