They can innovate and move 2d mario fawards. New eviroments, physics and mecanics along with a gorgous new mario style. It could force them to make 2d mario better.

The indie wave of 2D platformers can give Nintendo a lot of inspiration. I would guess there will be more co-op, more online, more user created material.

Providing the masses with the tools needed to make music won't render professional musicians obsolete.

Same thing applies to video games.

Mario 2D are death.
PLS Nintendo, make only Mario 3D!!!!!!!!

I can't believe my eyes. What have Nintendo fans come to?

No, but if they want to make a good new 2D Mario, they'd have to add new stuff. Which is a good thing.

Can't wait for The Zelder Scrolls 3: Breath of The Wild Hunt!

When Mario Maker was first announced, that was what I thought would happen, and also the same reason why Nintendo held this off for so long.

I'm sure 2D Mario games can survive, but something really unique has to be added in order for people to get the next game

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

I wasn't sure If I should buy Mario Maker day 1, but after this E3 I'am really hyped for it.
They should create a new 2D Mario, which includes a DLC for Mario Maker.

The thing with most Mario platformers is that they introduce exclusive power ups in each game. As long as they don't start sell some of the newer powers as DLC before or immediately after a new game drops, plus the emphasis on co-op for most non 3D movement games then Mario platform action from Nintendo proper isn't going anywhere.

I'm still not convinced that the MM levels will be long enough to be anything more than just glorified obstacle courses. Everything I've seen so far seems to make it look that way, and if that's the case, people are still going to want new entries with levels that you can just sit down and play for a while without constantly reaching the end and having to find a new level to play. Now if MM introduced the ability to make whole world maps and campaigns that would be a different story, but I don't think that's happening.

No,because the next New super mario bros, will change dramatically, this needs to be done finally!
I'm sure that Nintendo has understood that they have to innovate, advance New super mario bros and give us a fairly different expererience,I mean that the successor must not remind the predecessor, with which I don't have a problem,I loved the last installments of the handheld version and the home console version, but many complain about it!

What about a New super mario bros which take place in space?New super mario bros galaxy!:P
