Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Would PS4 like performance be enough for Nintendo NX?

The next Nintendo console will have a "gimmick". Nintendo has already basically said so ("new game concept", "upgrading hardware is boring"), etc.

Nintendo is not going to simply do the same thing Sony and MS do. I think we may as well just accept that for better or worse.

Truth be told, I find Nintendo games looks pretty damn good on the Wii U as is. This isn't like the Wii vs. PS3/360, where Wii games looked like garbage on an HDTV set next PS3/360 games.

Wii U games still look nice if the effort is put into them.

I wouldn't honestly be all that choked about a platform in the 1 TFLOP range with 3-4GB of RAM for games.

I agree.. hardware is important but GAMES are more important and nintendo does need more developers 3rd or 2nd party.. they really should acquire Platinum Games, Sega, or Capcom.. they need help cause they can't make games fast enough as it is .. and they don't make games that appeal to a wide enough audience.. but without extra support (3rd or 2nd or 1st) nintendo is not curing its weakest link.

Well the other thing I would say to that is maybe Nintendo really doesn't have ambitions of "winning" the console war. They simply want to make a nice sized profit.

Unifiying the platforms should ease some of the software release headaches they have though.

Here are reasons for acquiring more talent (i. e. monolith, next level, intelligent studios, gamefreak, Rare, Retro studios)

1. It would strengthen the nintendo brand by having "exclusives" that are unique to the company purchased i.e. street fighter, megaman, resident evil, monster hunter, devil may cry, bayonetta,

2. It would fill the void or droughts due to selling Rare and losing 3rd parties to sony/xbox

3. It would widen appeal and in turn may create more "nintendo" fans and more system and game sales.

4. newly acquired studios games may be a gateway "drug" to nintendo properties

5. newly acquired studios would help nintendo with inhouse games and HD DEVELOPMENT

6. Will help develop for either unified or two separate systems

In summary, acquiring more talent (developers) will kill multiple birds with ONE STONE!  I dont see how nintendo cant profit from THis

They can easily not profit from it ... developers don't work for free, nor do the buildings they're in operate for free. There are large overhead costs to having tons of developers and owning them all. It's why even big studios like EA have massive layoffs and others like THQ have gone out of business entirely.

Beyond that and I don't think people understand this ... Nintendo *likes* being a small-ish company. To them expanding too much would dilute the Nintendo "culture", they like to micromanage things and that means keeping the company footprint very small.

Nintendo talks about "TRANSFORMATION" and with that comes a gamble or risk depending what they are transforming into.. They were times when nintendo said they would never stop using cartridges, or never develop games for mobile, (android, or ios)...

Just look at disney.. imagine if they never invested in ESPN, ABC, Marvel, or Star Wars.  Every one knows that a company or person can make a wise investment..

You reap what you sow.. I think investing in talent (developers) is a wise and calculated investment.. just look at monolith soft, Retro, gamefreak..

I think so. People like to forget, but the main reason why PS4 is the leader is because of x86 and 1080p. If NX is more powerful than the PS4... lets say enough to do 1080p and 60 fps with little issue, then that will be more than enough to last next gen. Resolution won't become a issue again until TVs with higher resolutions than 1080p become commonplace. Sony could push PS5 with hardware that goes above 1080p but there would be no point. Almost all TVs won't utilize it. So it becomes a non selling point to the average consumer.

Nintendo just needs to make sure that their next console has the x86 architecture for easy ports and then almost all 3rd parties will have no excuse to not port their game to NX. That and make sure that their online infrastructure isn't a joke like people like to claim about Wii U. It will need stuff like party chat, and the like. If they do then all their ducks will be in a row. Especially if NX has a 3 or 4 year head start on PS5 and Nextbox.

PS4 is selling for more reasons than 1080p multiplats. To say its selling for resolution is delusional. It has a strong library of games like XB1 but it plays many of the same games with better graphics.

By the time PS5 comes out 4K/8K will be the standard. 1080p would be a thing of the past. People are already moving to 4K TV. If PS5 releases in 2018 the majority of the western world would have moved to 4K. In such a situation NX will look bad again. Also PS5 and XB2 will have far more powerful hardware than NX and then the situation will once again be the same.

Lets not forget that PS4 and XB1 can easily run 1080p60fps ports of all PS3 games. As graphics have evolved PS4 and XB1 have been unable to do that with current-gen games. So if NX is able to run current PS4 games at 1080p60fps, it will have a hard time doing 1080p30fps with PS5 and XB1 games if it can run them at all. And as I said 4K will be the standard by then. NX needs to be a generation above PS4 in terms of power to stand a chance against PS5 and XB2.

I have a hard time believing that 4/8k will be standard by the time PS5 comes out. Average consumers don't see much benefit outside of 1080p and 60 fps. They are just now starting to make a single card that can keep up with 4k on PC. I find it doubtful that there will be a production console out there in the next 4 years that will be running 4k at a locked 60 fps. Diminishing returns for power usage is a real thing when it comes to graphics and outside of enthusiasts I just don't see 4/8k being a big deal, since its the exact same games. Maybe 1080p with some AA but I think it will all go towards improving other effects and not just raw resolution.

4K will become the standard by 2018. Right now it may seem expensive and unlikely but its quickly becoming more mainstream both among consumers and PC gamers. I think 4K30fps will be the standard next-gen as costs of these 4K rigs are dropping quickly. ALso as I said graphics will advance a lot next-gen and with PS4 level hardware NX wouldn't even be able to run those games at 1080p30fps.

If VR takes off then NX will have another problem which going by Reggie's comments they will not have an answer to.

Yes, I think they will target power little above PS4 with similar architecture, that will secure them easy 1080p ports for third party and more than enough power for 1080p/60fps Nintendo games.

I just don't see it happening. Not for a while. Not unless DX12 or something like it becomes standard for consoles. Even then I think it wouldn't be a issue. The supposed issue for Nintendo and Wii U isn't just the power, its the architecture. If NX is using x86 then the ports shouldn't be nowhere near as complicated a mess as it is for Wii U. Turning down settings and fine tuning from there doesn't sound nearly as bad as what it would take to make a game fly on Wii U. Besides the real strength of NX will be both handheld and console dev teams for Nintendo putting their games on NX, vs just the console teams with Wii U. Even without 3rd party support, Nintendo will be fine this time.

NX will be out 2016 and it still will be a 8th gen console.
