Forums - Gaming Discussion - Not sure to be excited for Final Fantasy VII Remake

If they fuck with the core battle system SE completely doesn't understand the fans that have been pleading for a remake the last 10 years.

There are some elements of FFVII that just seem dated, now. They're going to have to make some changes but who knows what changes will please fans and which ones will piss them off? Sleep well knowing the game is actually being made. There will be plenty of time to form an opinion as the game begins development.

The game will be an Action RPG, it'll be amazing, old fans will riot but buy it anyway, and new gamers will buy it since Sony will advertice the fuck out of it. Fuck random encounters. That's all.

I'm now filled with determination.

SE hasn't let me down. So I'm good.

I expect the absolute worst, while hoping for the best.

Based on how FF XV looks like I don't think we should be worried. This game looks really good. Finally more action like battle system (I prefer this over FF XIII). If, for example, FF VII will have battle system from PSP's Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII I would be satysfied. I really enjoyed this game with this system, but I don't know how will this work at home console.
I am pretty sure, that Square Enix know what they are doing. They must be pretty confident that they can meet expectations and deliver great game. We must remember, that for many years they were saying that it is not possible to deliver remake of Final Fantasy VII.
I, as every one probably, wish them all the best.

I read a couple articles earlier, and what I got was basically that Nomura said this:

This will not be 1:1 remake. He doesn't see the point in calling it a remake if it is ultimately the exact same game minute for minute but with prettier graphics. Whether this will prove to be a good thing or bad thing of course, is hard to say. He's said that the story won't play out exactly the same, though it's good to presume that the most basic elements of the story and staple moments won't be changing. Lighthearted moments and cross dressing Cloud are coming back in full. Otherwise, he has also said that the old battle system will not work, at least not as it was in the initial release. It wouldn't make sense at all to have this big pretty game with everybody still lining up for random encounters in slow and stiff turn based battles.

What you all have to understand is that a remake is not a clone. More often than not, a remake takes the base material and improves upon it, making an attempt at creating something more akin to what the product would have been had it been released in current years rather than the better part of 20 years ago. This is going to step on a lot of toes, but no matter how you look at it, a traditional turn based RPG battle system feels archaic. At some point you have to divorce what would be good for nostalgia, and when pandering to nostalgia is just holding an experience back.

With that said, my opinion on FFVII is that it has been, by far, the most overhyped Final Fantasy game ever. It doesn't have the best story (FFVI says hello), the Materia is system is grindy garbage that I can never understand why people latched onto so firmly, and it was easily the worst of the PS1 entries, maybe better than VIII depending on how well you understand VIII's slightly broken, well, everything. Combat felt slow and underwhelming, and drawn out summon sequences became pure torture in any fight. That isn't to say it wasn't a good first try at 3D Final Fantasy. It isn't my least favorite FF game. Least favorite goes to the abysmal FFX followed by FFXII (admittedly I haven't even bothered with the XIII series). It just wasn't this god send that people seem to think it was.

I get a lot of you want some beautiful 1:1 remake, and maybe they'll include some gameplay options that pander to nostalgia just the way you want. They have a large new audience to consider too though. There are far more people that haven't played FF VII than you might think, and SE needs to tap into that potential and turn out an experience that resembles more like what the game would have been were it getting its initial release in 2016/2017 rather than around 20 years before that. Personally, I'm someone who will completely pass on the remake if it's just the same 'ol same 'ol. I thought the initial game was plagued with issues that they largely alleviated as the PS1 generation went on, but even then, IX may have been the pinnacle of PS1 FF games, but if SE remade it and just gave me the same battle system again, I wouldn't even bother with it.

It has a better story than FFVI. Material system was surprisingly deep with how you can configure the strongest materias (final attack, revive, double attack, etc...)

It also has more side quests than any other FFs - snowboarding, bike riding, submarine, the shooting gallery in the theme park, the arena, chocoholic breeding. There was just so much do.

The music was also the best.

I don't care. As long as the whole story, the basic gameplay concepts (all characters are playable, the Materia, Limit Breaks, etc), the sub quests, minigames and explorable map are there I'm happy. I'll sure not cry if they get a rid of those annoying random encounters or if they improve the old turn based mechanism. It's a remake, it isn't supposed to be a carbon copy. For that there will be the HD remaster.

But whatever it will be I will buy it and enjoy it. That's all I know!!
