Forums - Gaming Discussion - Is the Wii U the worst console of all time?(OP clarification)

OP clarification

Since some people have been complaining- I will define some boundaries. When I am talking about worst of all time I mean within the big four companies( Sony, Microsoft, Sega and Nintendo.) So yeah if your little bro made a console back in the 70's in Wiscosin IT DOESNT' COUNT. I don't care how bad you think it was compared to the Wii U. Neither does it count if some obscure company decided to make money and failed with their console. We are talking about the big four companies here. About the consoles that  people think that most about when they think about console wars.

Hello everyone,

I am not trying to start a flame war but I am trying to be realistic and objective.

 Hardware

In terms of hardware the Wii U gamepad has no purpose. People don't understand the concept. In comparison with the Wii-at least the Wii controller made sense, the Wii masterfully executed its concept on Wii sports. The Wii U? Not so much.

Software

You can complain all you want about the gamecube. Yet it still had third party support like Resident evil 4,Beyond Good and Evil and Soul Calibur II. The Wii U doesn't. What's worst the Gamecube had strong first party support Mario Sunshine, Metroid Prime and Windwaker. The Wii U doesn't even have a Prime game nor  a strong Mario game. We don't even know if Zelda will even come up for Wii U or be skipped all together. Remember, Nintendo can change their minds.

It's an incredibly sad day when Nintendo fans  are excited because Nintendo is localizing Mother into Earthbound Origins. Are you guys serious? A 26 year old game its the best nintendo can give us.

Please be respectful in this thread and I would call upon anyone to systematically challenge my points.

Yes, its literally worse than the Atari Jaguar.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Worse than the 3DO, Jaguar, CD-i, 5200, 7800, Pippin, Intellivision? Are YOU serious?

Well, when it comes to ALL TIME, I don't think so.

When you compare it to consoles from the past decade though, then yeah, the Wii U is the worst.

The GamePad has been extremely under utilized, and while the first party titles are great, the major lack of third party titles is pretty terrible, and the sales of the Wii U pretty much show.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

Hey CTK it has been long. Just wanted to say that Gamecube didn't have Okami.

Yes but did you expected anything from those companies? This is Nintendo we are taking about- they are supposed to be master of hardware development. After all they have created the N64, SNES and NES. There are higher expectations for a company like Nintendo. I think that makes the Wii U even worst than the other platforms.

Apparently consoles didn't exist before the 6th gen

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

GameCube first party is overrated.

Mario 3D World >>> Sunshine.

Like seriously take off the nostalgia glasses with Sunshine, it's a terrible Mario game with bloated level design all set on a tropical island (who the hell thought a Mario game with all tropical themed levels was a good idea?), that had camera glitches and bugs up the wazoo and the back end of the game was piss poor.

Splatoon >>> Pikmin

These were the so-called "new IP" of the GameCube ... I'm sorry, Splatoon is way better. It's a far better game and truly the next great Nintendo IP. Not only that but Wii U has Pikmin 3 as well.

Mario Kart 8 >>> Mario Kart: Double Dash

Double Dash had a pathetic number of tracks, MK8 has far more content.

Smash U = Smash Melee

Smash Melee was the one big IP Nintendo got right on the GCN, but Smash U matches it IMO.

DKC: Tropical Freeze > DK: Jungle Beat

EAD Tokyo made a good effort here, but a "real" DKC game with actual controls the return of David Wise trumps a spin-off DK game with bongo controls.

If Zelda U is better than Wind Waker, then the Wii U has the GameCube beat in many major Nintendo IP.

The gamepad does serve a purpose. Games that use it well prove that it's better to have it there than to not have it there, like Deus Ex and WWHD. It's there and it's useful when it needs to be. It doesn't have to revolutionize anything. I just needs to be used well.

And it has the best games of the generation collectively by far. Just doesn't have a whole lot quantitatively.

Disappointing console? Sure. Worst ever? Not event remotely close.
