Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why I'm not happy about the Shenmue III Kickstarter

Think about it this way: Sony will be more than happy to publish Shenmue 3 on PS4. But they won't publish it on PC. So who is going to pay for the PC port? Kickstarter backers!

although that is just pure speculation. Nobody knows what's really going on in the end. I'm just happy it's happening at all.

They would have had to mention that in their kickstarter. It would be against kickstarter's policies otherwise.

  1. Our community is built on trust and communication. Projects can’t mislead people or misrepresent facts, and creators should be candid about what they plan to accomplish. When a project involves manufacturing and distributing something complex, like a gadget, we require projects to show a prototype of what they’re making, and we prohibit photorealistic renderings.

I'm backing, smashed the funding goal in only nine hours. PS4 and PC exclusive makes me happy too.

Its already funded, at an average of 80 dollars / person. I find it shady as well, its like a massive pre-order campaign at a very high price (yes, people want to pay. I'm not saying they are forced. I'm saying they are paying for no good reason). We still don't know how far in development have gotten, and to be fair, if the game will ever be released.

I highly doubt that they will sell more copies because of this, compared to being on stage and Sony simply saying "You wanted it, we made it happen!". They did however get their most devoted fans to spend more money.

In the end, 2mill is nothing. They have to have funding from somewhere else. They just made fans pay for the marketing campaign...

In a way, it's the fans that really make the game possible and not Sony... Also, since it's not fully exclusive, I can enjoy it on my PC.

Why is it so hard for people to understand what's going on here? 2 million isn't enough to make this game. Sony is using kickstarter, and they're backing the rest. It's that simple. There are no console stretch goals.. Doesn't that say it all for you?

Remember though, third party timed exclusive content and marketing deals is what truly matters.

There is zero chance the budget for shenmue 3 will be 2 million $ , the developers or Sony will add the remaining budget.

There is also zero chance that the kickstarter revenue stays below 3 million $ the next 30 days.

How is this being released? Don't Sega hold the rights? So how does Sony publish it, if that's the case?

Are we sure Sony is publishing it? From what I gather YS Net is licensing the game's IP from Sega, like how Nintendo licensed Bayonetta 2.

Straight from the Kickstarter:

"SEGA has officially given us the rights to use the "Shenmue" license."
