It really shouldn't be any downplay from the other crowds. This is great news. MS stepping it up. I was waiting for this.

Well, the announcement was a surprise and good for gamers but aren't some people overreacting to it? To be fair, the PS3 was backwards compatible early in last gen but people really didn't want it. It did not help sales.

Because the other platforms were also backwards compatible. In this scenario the Ps4 is not backwards compatible while the Wii U and XBO are backwards compatible. If somebody wants to play 7th generation  games, and don't want extra 7th generation consoles sitting around, then they will benefit from gettings one of these two other platforms. When the differences between an XBO and PS4 can be essentially counted with a single person's hands, any small bonus feature becomes much bigger than it would've been otherwise.

Its really more a PR stunt then anything, Face it, its only a minority, who need backward compatibility. And Need its a big word.

The adoption rate is more then 67% and People, use and ressell there old gameand console to do so. like the 6% and the 11% who used the retro on ps3 and 360. Its low userbase.

Its really just to be able as a PR to say we have (that number of game) and its really sad too use some loop to push sell :|.

I was happy with my retro at first. And turn out I used it once ...

Exactly this is just PR and a ufinished feature that will need a lot of work to be useful.

No one is down playing anything. The fact is that this does not equal BC for the entire library of 360 games as people seem to be forgetting so what is big about it? The only thing that stood out was "free" to do it,but that is only if you have the discs to that crappy list of games that are supported so far lol.If you could play the entire catalog of 360 games day one than it would be a bigger deal, but not as it is.

Probably the biggest thing to come out of the conference. Excellent news!

So is it all games or does there need to be stuff done to get games to work? The conference made it seem like every game, but on giant bomb there was a list of 'compatible' games

The conference announced that 100 games would be playable at the holidays, with more to come.

I mean, even 100 games seems small for a console with 6/7 years worth of games.

When it was first announced I went 'holy shit every game is going to be playable, that's amazing'. Well see how it works out, but it seems like less of a big deal than I thought

This was M$es revenge on Sony for that silly commercial they made about trading and borrowing games. It woke up the sleeping giant and since they are a software company at heart, they went all out to shame PS Now. Even saying play your 360 games for free is a jab at paying for backwards compatibility. I've said it before, if MS really wanted to they can make the Xbone have local BC of they tried hard enough.

I was listening to the show with a coworker who is a PlayStation fanboy, like me, and both of our jaws dropped. The first thing he said was, "I'm going to have to get an Xbox One now" he is also a big Mass Effect fan and seeing it being played made him mad. He said, "Why does Xbox always get the good stuff? Sony needs to step up their game."

For the people that are saying it's no big deal, Wii U has it, PS3 had it. It is a big deal. Last generation brought gamer scores and achievements. Xbox 360 games still hold value due to that. Wii games and PS2 games mostly hold nostalgia.

I have 2TBs of digital 360 games that still need to be played. Having digital rights to those games hold even greater value now, since they carry over to Xbone.

So now its cool to play old games even though most games are not and may never be supported? MS even said that it is up to the devs themselves and I doubt many third parties will be on board when it does not benefit them financially. This announcement is for playing a few old games and does not make the X1 stand out for games specifically on the console and even the indie games accounced were for Windows 10 too.It is not a big deal since the Wiiu has sold poorly and people did not flock to the PS3 when it had it.That 2TB of 360 games you have is not suppoprted by the X1 and may never be supported.Even if they were it would take years to make that many games compatible.Take a step back and think about the logic for one minute.People are caught up in the possibilities instead of the realiy.

Well, you need to think of Xbone's feature set to truly appreciate this. When I play 360, I lose the ability to snap TV or other Streaming apps I may choose to watch while playing. Also the achievements app can be snapped to the right, if M$ enables it with 360 games, is fucking brilliant.

Also, the main feature about 360 games which you failed to recognize is Achievements, which make gamers have more replay value. Cool for games that are playable on Xbone. This whole feature is a plus for those games. The games that aren't supported yet, are we losing something. It's not like it was there and taken away.

And all this with no constant internet needed. What am I losing?

The way I understood it was that you have to download the actual game and nothing but the license is loaded from the disc. That sounds to me that you're simply downloading a ported version.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to downplay this feature. As I said, kudos to MS for actually going the extra mile.

Depends what part of it is actually being downloaded.  A profile or a full game, seems like a ton of work to port all these games just for free backwards compatibility.

actually it's not a rocket science, SONY did this on PSN with their PS2 and PS1 games for PS3. I also have a doubt how Power PC able to emulate perfectly on hardware and software level on Medicore spec like Jaguar.  If they can do emulation i bet it only emulate old games that came on Xbox 360 early first year. If they can do i bet PS4 able to do the same thing but with more dificulty, assuming Xbox One does the emulation on hardware and software level.

Anyone else think Sony would avoid this because they have been banking in on selling a 'New' Remastered versions of their last gen games. If they allowed people to play their old PS3 versions they would lose a lot of money. Or am I missing something?

This is a BIG move for Microsoft. I have PS4 and Wii U, but the fact I could go on Amazon and order 360 games many AAA titles for like $5 to $10 bucks and play them on my X Box One, on top of the already impressive X One library of games... My brother has only an X One and we gamed together our whole lives until this gen...

I think Microsoft just snagged another customer. Looks like I'll be stuck with all 3 this generation... shucks ;p

Yeah this was a kick to Sony's coin purse. It makes you wonder how Sony is going to react to what Microsoft just did today. All i know is Gears, BC, rare collection, and halo 5. Daaaaamn i am finally buying an xb1.
