Forums - Movies & TV - Mad Max was a bit meh

No, sorry I haven't seen the lethal weapon films. What is Mel like in that?

And Max definitely did not want to help them, in fact he tries to shoot them doesn't he? He drives off leaving them alone for capture until he has no choice but to co operate to start the war rig.

He plays an absolute psycho in the first Lethal Weapon (for...understandable reasons), the 2nd he's a bit less psycho (but still unstable), the 3rd and 4th he's much better (Basically his partnerning with Danny Glover aka Roger and his interaction with Roger's family, starts to bring him back to earth so-to-speak...part of what LW1 so compelling for me, was his emotional distress, which honestly, I thought he played pretty dang well.

Then why does he come back to them and tell them to go back to the Citadel?

Theres nothing wrong with style over substance, as long as it doesn't lead to crap like Sucker Punch.

It's called character development, and in fact it's something this movie has in abundance.

No, a character suddenly changing isn't called character development. Just like suddenly turning Nux from bad guy to good guy isn't character development.

Also, what other character development was there? I mean, according to you, the movie has that in abundance, right?

I don't see where you saw "sudden" change in a movie that had characters constantly evolving throughout its 2 hours.

Max slowly went from a lonely psycho to someone who eventually started caring about those people around him. Nux went from being manipulated into thinking how Immortan Joe wanted him (and everyone else) to, to actually realizing how stuff worked. The girls escaping with Furiosa clearly started to grow mentally stronger through the harshness of the road and situations they were put in, and Furiosa, well... I don't remember how she changed a lot, but she did go through several things in the movie and her original goal of escaping from town and going as far away as possible in search of an oasis was inverted with Max's advice.

It was one of the most clear examples of characters changing and evolving as I've seen in a movie.

Nux - years of brainwashing is erased within a minute. Literally a minute from talking to the redheaded woman. And you misremember his motivations - he didn't realise anything. He thought he disappointed Joe so he started quivering in the truck and then saw the light. And everyone trusted him.

Max - he doesn't even know these people and yet started caring within a day of meeting them? Why? Because a ghost told him to help them. That ghost thing was so silly. This is why Mel Gibson's Max was so much cooler (based on Max Max 2). He didn't care and was true to his character from start to finish.

As for the wives, they were background characters with no development arc. Growing mentally stronger - really reaching there.

WHAAAAAT?! IT WAS AMAZBALLS!!!!!!!!! Best summer flick so far!

I found the movie amazing, and one of the best action movies in recent years. Tom Hardy is great as a more psychologically disturbed Max, even though this movie with a younger Mel would have topped everything.

I don't really remember most of the stuff, so I won't argue with most of what you said. But about Mel's Max staying "true to his character from start to finish", the way you put it it's like the actor decides the plot or something.

And yes, they did grow a lot, I'm not sure how you couldn't realize that. At the beginning of the movie, they looked really weak and incapable of doing anything without Furiosa's help, while at the end they were playing a big part in the battle and doing stuff on their own. It was very clear.

I think you're forgetting the wives fighting Nux when they are first encountered with Max and Nux chained together. It's fine approaching a movie as just a popcorn flick but don't even try to find things in there that don't exist. Personally, I find it hard not to ask questions when watching a movie.

Max didn't change in one instance but after going through all that hell with them, he didn't want them going on a road to nowhere across the salt i'm guessing.

If an action movie does CRITICALLY well, you know it must have a decent amount of substance.
