I'm comparing the wii u to the wii, I'm comparing the ps4 to the ps3. The wii u is dated, but thanks to that it's a big progression from the also dated wii (just like ps2 vs ps4). the ps3 was not dated, just like the ps4, and thanks to that, the progression is simple. I'm not praising or downgrading any hardware, just stating how I see those consoles.

All of them enjoyed a similar jump in power and performance. The Wii U got a jump that puts it a little above the PS3 and XBox 360. Since the Wii was a gen behind in performance compared to the HD twins, it jumped a generation forward, just like the PS4 and XBO. But with that jump, it just managed to reach he performance and power of the 7th gen HD twins. It's more powerful than those two, but not significantly enough to put it in a league of its own.
I get what you mean about Nintendo finally providing a console that offers HD graphics. But resolution isn't the only thing that should to be taken into account when gauging the graphics performance. What the PS4 and XBO can do is leagues beyond what the 7th gen consoles could do. The Wii U made a jump similar to the other two, while still being quite outdated.
But I'm with you on one thing: Seeing those Nintendo franchises finally in HD is a sight to behold. Zelda U is currently being of the best looking game I've seen so far this gen (and I can't wait for them to show us more, dammit!). Despite not being as technically advanced as games like The Witcher 3 (which also look phenomenal). Nintendo's flair for visual styles that take advantage of the hardware's strengths while doing one heck of a job to work with their limitations, makes for games that stant the test of time better than what most other developers produce. Wind Waker being the best example of that. When all there needs to be done for a game to remain fresh visually is a resolution bump... Games like Metroid Prime Trilogy, Super Mario Galaxy and Pikmin would look like Wii U games still just with that resolution bump. Anyway, I digress. I get what you mean about the jump from SD to HD. Which is kinda dramatic compared to just being able to work with more polygons, better shaders, more dynamic effects, etc... But the jump is just the same across the board for all 3 consoles.
