It's not doing well simply because 99% of the games it gets are very niche. Of course that means for those that enjoy those niches it is a fantastic console. But yeah, memory cards aren't the reason. |
The low sales made it lost the 3rd party titles it got early on. In 2012-13, it got a lot of big games. I think there are two factors related to its failure:
- Price: the unit is fairly expensive and the memory cards only make it way worse. The public showed more than once that a portable console should not cost more than 200 bucks at launch.
- Dying market: mobile stole the market. It seems that people don't want to carry multiple devices and between a phone and a portable console, the first one is obviously much more important. Despite that, while playing a home console, you want a big budget experience, while on the go you want a fast game that you can play on intervals. Having a Vita, I can confirm that very few Vita (and 3DS) games actually demand a long session to make some progress, while mobile games allow the user to pass a stage in 1, 2 minutes.
I think that the best alternative for portable consoles it to release an hybrid phone/handheld, with physical controls in a phone form factor, like Xperia Play. The last one was a decent attempt, but it suffered because:
- Sony used an outdated SoC and specs in a gaming oriented device. When it launched, you could buy several phones that would play games better.
- It wasn't a PlayStation. The initial rumours were for a PS phone. It was just a Xperia phone with buttons. In the end, Sony didn't want to scrap the Vita, so that one was the PS device while they wouldn't go full fledge for the Xperia, that also never got exclusives like Uncharted or Killzone. It was just a glorified phone.
I would see a PS phone (not Xperia) as a good move. A sleed form factor and a decent SoC (Tegra X1) would make it an impressive machine. It shouldn't be branded as Xperia. It's not a succesful brand. It should be branded as PS and get exclusive games. Basically, Xperia Play branded as PS, without any mention to Xperia, with top phone hardware when it launches plus all the eclusive treatment that Vita got in the beginning.
This same logic could be used for NX as a hybrid phone/handheld. Price also becomes a no-factor, because phones are sold on contracts so you can put a US$ 600 hardware and it will end up at US$ 99/150 on a contract.
